In Loving Memory of Douglas Tyrrell
December 6, 1940 – March 8, 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Douglas Tyrrell, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left this world on March 8, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on December 6, 1940, in Troy, Michigan, Douglas was the beloved son of the late Stanley and Naomi Tyrrell.
A man of honor and service, Douglas dedicated his life to protecting others. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years, achieving the rank of Technical Sergeant as a military police officer. His career took him across the world, including a tour in Vietnam, where he served with bravery and distinction. After retiring from the military, he continued his career in security, serving as a Security Supervisor at Miami International Airport with Eastern Airlines and later as the head of security at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School. His work was a testament to his unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of others.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Douglas was a man of warmth and deep devotion. He shared a beautiful and enduring love with his wife of 60 years, Kay Tyrrell. Their journey together began in Tainan City, Taiwan, where they married on December 16, 1964. Together, they built a life rich in love, family, and faith.
Douglas was a proud and loving father to his two sons, Stan Tyrrell (Christine) and Douglas Tyrrell Jr. (Blendia). He cherished his role as a grandfather and found immense joy in the lives of his grandchildren: Kailyn Vance (Tyrrell), Shyan Tyrrell, Amanda Ungaro (Tyrrell), Kyani Tyrrell, Yanai Tyrrell, Michael Tyrrell, and his great-granddaughter, Isla Vance.
A man of strong faith and an outgoing personality, Douglas was always the life of the room, engaging with those around him and ensuring that no one felt like a stranger. He found joy in simple pleasures-spending time with his family, sharing laughter, and fishing with his sons, creating memories that will be treasured forever. He found peace on the water, and his family will always remember the joy of bringing home a fresh catch for Kay to prepare.
Douglas leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering dedication to those he held dear. His memory will be cherished, and his presence deeply missed. While we grieve his passing, we take comfort in knowing that he is now at peace, reunited with his Lord and those who went before him.
Douglas will be laid to rest with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery, a fitting tribute to his life of service and sacrifice. In honor of his love for family and service, the family asks that donations be made in his memory to The
Alzheimer's Association (alz.org).
Rest in peace, Douglas. Your love, laughter, and light will forever live on in our hearts.
