Douglas Warnock Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Abbey Funeral Home and Tallahassee Memory Gardens - Tallahassee on Nov. 16, 2023.
Reverend Douglas Wayne Warnock, 78, went to be with his Savior and Lord on Thursday, November 10, in Tallahassee, Florida. Doug was born September 23, 1945 at Victoria Hospital in Miami, Florida, the first of three sons in the family of Bill and Joyce Warnock. He grew up in Hialeah, Florida, graduated from Hialeah High School, and went on to study at Miami-Dade Community College. It was at the campus's Baptist Student Union where he met and fell in love with his wife to be, Pat Penny, and from there he earned an Associate of Arts degree. Doug went on to enroll at Florida State University, where became a member of Phi Beta Kappa and earned a Bachelor and Master of Education degrees. Following FSU and marriage, their family grew to include Lisa Ann (Stewart) Parker (Houston, TX) and Col. Douglas Wayne Warnock, Jr. (USAF, Colorado Springs, CO). Sharing love and life, Doug and Pat recently celebrated their fifty-sixth anniversary of marriage. They've enjoyed being Santa and Mrs. Claus at the Tallahassee Jingle Mingle for several years. As FSU Alums, they've also enjoyed attending football games and other activities.
Doug began his teaching career at Sopchoppy Elementary and RAA Middle School. Following that, he worked at Florida's Department of Transportation and then with Fidelity Life Insurance, which took him to Auburn and Montgomery, AL. In Montgomery he became CFO for the St. James Academy.
A man of faith and family, Doug was associated for twelve years with the Bill Glass and the Chuck Colson Prison Ministries, where he volunteered at Alabama's Kilbey Correctional Facility. He became a Freemason in Tallahassee's Robert Butler Lodge No.402 and later became active in the Scottish Rite Masons of Wilmington, NC. As an active Freemason, Doug earned his fifty-year pen in 2019. Faithful to his Lord and church, Doug volunteered at Tallahassee's Thomasville Road Baptist Church as Sunday School teacher, Young at Heart choir member, and frequently gave devotionals at the Senior Adult Ministry luncheons.
While a deacon and Sunday School teacher at Eastdale Baptist Church in Montgomery, Doug surrendered to God's call into full-time pastoral ministry. He and Pat then moved to Louisville, KY to enroll in studies at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. After earning a Master of Divinity degree, Doug pastored the Atkinson Baptist Church of Atkinson, NC for seventeen years. While there, he served as President of the Wilmington Baptist Ministerial Association, was active in the North Carolina Baptist Convention, the Atkinson Masonic Lodge, and was a Board member of the Safe Haven of Pender County, NC. Expressing and extending the love of God, Doug and Pat joined Southern Baptist missionary Clara Huff on a mission trip to Chile where they preached, taught and ministered. After years of service and ministry in North Carolina, Doug and Pat retired to Tallahassee, from which they traveled to North and South America, Europe and Asia, enjoying their family, friends and participating in church and community activities.
Doug was devoted to his Lord, his family and community. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, music, reading, traveling and especially time with his wife, children, five grandchildren: Joseph, Victoria, Isabella Parker (Houston, TX), Kadie and Will Warnock (Auburn, AL); brothers Rev. Tom (Dottie) Warnock (Pendleton, SC) and Lt.Col-select Ted (Beth) Warnock, USAF(Retired), Ph.D. (New Bern, NC); sister-in-law Carol Penny (Miami, FL); nephew Jonathan Warnock (Pendleton, SC); nieces Sara (Drew) Moss (London, UK), Laura (Scott) Ballard (Memphis, TN) and Rachel Warnock (Memphis, TN); cousin Kathy Lee (Hilton Head Island, SC) and numerous friends and acquaintances who experienced and were blessed by Doug in some way in their life.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Friday, November 24 at Abbey Funeral Home of Tallahassee. Visitation will be 1-2 pm, with service and entombment following. The service will be live streamed via Doug's Tribute page at www.abbeyfh.com. In lieu of flowers the family would like to suggest donations be made to the Youth Mission Trip Fund of Thomasville Road Baptist Church, Tallahassee or Mission Dignity at missiondignity.org.
