Lord & Stephens Funeral Home - WestDowse Bradwell “Buzz” Howell, 84, passed away on July 6, 2025. A native of Athens, Georgia, Buzz was the husband of Carolyn Bond Howell and the son of William Walker Howell and Julia Bradwell Howell. His parents, his brother William Walker “Billy” Howell Jr. and his wife Ann Nunnally Howell preceded him in death. Buzz worked as Golf Course Superintendent at the Athens Country Club for 42 years until retiring in 2006. He served as President of the Georgia Golf Course Superintendent’s Association (GGCSA) from 1983-84, was awarded Superintendent of the Year in 1995 and was inducted into the GGCSA Hall of Fame in 2012. In his retirement, Buzz and his wife, Carolyn, became avid travelers. He enjoyed exploring new places, tailgating with friends, spending time with his family at his home, “Lake Nothing,” and being an active member of Chapelwood United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, five children: Jennifer (Stephen) Murray, Lynnly (James) Drinkard, Sandy Henderson, Ley Johnson and Jay (Michele) Johnson; 10 grandchildren: Hallie Murray, Ben (Kate) Murray, Casey Drinkard, Ann Drinkard, Fain (Addie) Henderson, Mallory Hufstetler, Morgan Henderson, Garet Johnson, Gabe Johnson and Hunter Johnson; and two great grandchildren: Benson Murray and Taylor Fayne Hufstetler. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 20th, at 11:00 a.m. at Chapelwood United Methodist and visitation with the family receiving friends beginning at 10:00 a.m., prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Chapelwood United Methodist Church. Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, WEST, Watkinsville, GA is in charge of arrangements.
