Dr. Clyde Russell Allen, Jr.

Dr. Clyde Russell Allen, 83, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on August 29, 2025.

Born November 21, 1941, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, Clyde grew up in the Mississippi Delta, the “Home of the Blues.” In high school, he was elected Mr. Clarksdale High and was active in Boy Scouts, earning the rank of Eagle Scout as well as the God and Country award.

Clyde attended Millsaps College, where he was a proud member of Kappa Alpha Order and played on the football team. He graduated in just three years before earning his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Mississippi Medical School. After completing an internship in Savannah, Georgia, he was commissioned into the United States Army, serving one year in Vietnam as a field outpost medical officer, followed by service at the Army hospital at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama.

In 1972, Clyde and his family settled in Laurel, Mississippi, where he practiced radiology for 38 years at Jones County Community Hospital (JCCH) as a partner with Radiology Associates. He held numerous leadership positions, including Chairman of the Board and Chairman of the Medical Staff at JCCH. He taught radiation physics to X-ray technology students, was certified by the American Board of Radiology and elected into Fellowship of the American College of Radiology.

A lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, Clyde lived his faith in service. He taught adult Sunday School, served on numerous committees, chaired the Board of Stewards, and was a trustee. Music was a cornerstone of his worship, and he sang in church choirs faithfully from the age of four until eighty.

In 1962, Clyde married his college sweetheart, Nancy Norton. Together they raised three children: Martie Miles (Kris), Betsy Bidwell (Scott), and Russell Allen (Bernadette). In 2010, Clyde and Nancy relocated to Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. That same year, Clyde also served as Rector of South Mississippi Methodist Cursillo.

He cherished time with his five grandchildren: Austin Bidwell (Sylvia), Miles Bidwell (Leigh), Sarah Elizabeth Barry (Michael), Olivia Allen, and Victoria Allen. In addition to his wife, Nancy and their children and grandchildren, Clyde is also survived by his brother, Edgar Allen (Kathleen), and two sisters, Joyce Callahan (Jim) and Janet Bebell (David).

Clyde was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Charleston, where he continued singing in the choir. He was an avid Bible scholar, golfer, tennis player, and world traveler. He and Nancy traveled extensively abroad, enjoyed nearly 30 cruises, and delighted in scuba diving adventures.

Dr. Allen will be remembered for his deep faith, dedication to medicine, love of music, and devotion to his family. Clyde was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde Allen, Sr. And Cathron Varner Allen.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at Bethel United Methodist Church, 57 Pitt Street, Charleston, SC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church (Bethel United Methodist Church - Give Online) or to the Alzheimer’s Association (Alzheimer's Association) in support of dementia research.
