Dr. Jan Mensink Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 18, 2025.
Dr. Jan Roderick Mensink went to be with Jesus on July 15, 2025. He passed away at the age of 74, in Bakersfield, California.

Dr. Mensink was born to John and Bonny Mensink in Vancouver, BC, Canada. In 1972 he married Dorothy Streifling. Rod started his career as an artistic stone mason, and later went to university to pursue his medical career. He did residencies in Family Practice and Neurosurgery, as well as working extensively in the Emergency Room. In 2012 he started his own medical office, The Practice, in Bakersfield, CA. He was passionate about using his medical practice to help people, and has blessed many people physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Rod was a renaissance man who could fix anything, built two houses with his own hands, and built and flew a helicopter. He invented and patented a medical device, regularly grew a large garden, and enjoyed travel, including medical missions. His Christian faith was paramount in his life, and his life message was, "Mercy to Me, Mercy to You". Visit https://drmensink.com/radio/ to listen to his sermon, which has profoundly impacted many lives.

his wife of 54 years, Dorothy;

his daughters Heidi and Sonja, and son-in-law Arkan Al-Amin;

his 4 grandchildren Jahan & Leila Rashidi, and Jonathan & Elisha Al-Amin;

his sisters Jenny White and Marion Gordon, and brother-in-law Al Gordon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Bonny Mensink, and his brother Jack Mensink.

His memorial will be held at Valley Baptist Church, Olive Drive Campus, 5500 Olive Dr, Bakersfield, at 10 AM on Monday, July 28.

I'll always remember the family reunion we had at your home in California and how impressed I was with Jan's amazing creativity in finding ways to brilliantly use technologies to save resources. He really was gifted. I also have greatly appreciated strong, wise, Christian stands he took even under unbelievable pressure to conform. Integrity and genius marked his life in every aspect, and his rewards will be many. Our condolences and blessings to those left behind.

Dr Mensink was a terrific Dr. he would always tell me "Don´t worry I´ll fix ya, I just need to get down to it". That´s just what he did. When I heard of his passing I was really sad. A shame to lose a great Dr someone who really cared about his patients. I wasn´t just a number he knew me & ALL MY PROBLEMS. Best thing is I knew he love the lord. He made sure you knew it to. When I walked into his office I´d always see this picture & it was comforting. You will be deeply missed & I´ll miss hearing you on the radio doing your segments. Prayers to your family at this time & always.

Dear Family,

I was so sorry to hear about your loss. I wanted to extend my heartfelt condolences to our family and friends.

I remember him fondly as Dorothy´s husband and the proud father of Heidi and Sonja. He had such a unique spirit-a renaissance cowboy of a doctor-and left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. I always admired his forward-thinking approach to preventative and concierge medicine, and to this day, whenever I think about optimal Vitamin D levels, I think of him.

His intelligence and adventurousness were unforgettable-building his own helicopter is something I still find incredible and inspiring.

Wishing you peace and comfort in the days ahead. He lived an extraordinary life and will be remembered well.

Warmly,
Contessa
