His story is one of achievement, generosity, and a love for preserving beauty in all its forms.

Born on October 26, 1935, in Washington, Louisiana, Richard was the cherished son of Mr. Wilford John Bidstrup and Mrs. Florence Earnestine Ortego Bidstrup. A proud graduate of Washington High School, he continued his education at Southwestern Louisiana Institute (SLI), earning his undergraduate degree and later serving as a teacher.

Driven by a calling to heal, Richard earned his medical degree from LSU Medical School then served his country in the United States Air Force, where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and served with distinction, including time stationed in France at Étain-Rouvres Air Force Base and Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. He pursued his fellowship while in the military specializing in Ear, Nose, Throat & Allergies at Emory University Medical School in Atlanta. His commitment to both medicine and community continued as he returned home to Louisiana to open a thriving ENT practice where, for decades, he provided essential care to the citizens of St. Landry Parish, earning the trust and gratitude of countless families.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Richard was a man of refined passions. His historic home, Poirier Place in Plaisance, stood as a southern masterpiece—a living tribute to his love of history and restoration. He welcomed friends and visitors for tours and gatherings, sharing the elegance of the past with warmth and hospitality. His joy extended to restoring homes, cars, planes, and antiques, breathing new life into treasures of bygone eras.

Richard’s life was anchored in relationships that mattered most. He cherished time with his siblings—Herman Bidstrup, Wilford Bidstrup, Jr., Sally Fruge and their families—creating memories steeped in laughter, tradition, and enduring love. Equally profound was his lifelong business associate and friendship with John Allgood, a bond forged in trust, loyalty, and shared Joie de vivre.

For decades, John was not only a business partner but a confidant and steadfast friend. Together, they built a life rich with purpose and joy—traveling widely, spending cherished time in Florida, and hosting gatherings that celebrated southern hospitality. John and his daughters, Lauryn Allgood and Brigette Soileau were like family to Richard, bringing warmth and companionship to his days.

Dr. Bidstrup’s life was defined by intelligence, integrity, and generosity. He invested deeply in his community, gave freely of his talents, and lived with a spirit of grace that touched everyone he met. His legacy is one of service to country, to medicine, to family, friends, beauty, and love—a life well-lived and well-shared.

"Well done, good and faithful servant." — Matthew 25:23
