Dr. Youssef Georgy Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Monahan Drabble Sherman Funeral Home on May 28, 2025.
Dr. Youssef Habib Georgy ("Gorgi"), 96, of Providence, Rhode Island, passed away on May 26, 2025. Born on July 6, 1928, in Cairo, Egypt, he was the beloved son of the late Habib Gorgi and Eugenie Abd El Sayed.

A devoted physician, Youssef began his distinguished medical career in Egypt in the early 50's, specializing in internal medicine and cardiology. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he was known for his zest for life-always ready with a smile, a story, or a game. Whether playing multiple racquet sports, billiards, poker, ping-pong, tawla (backgammon), or laughing with those around him, Youssef embraced each moment with warmth and joy. His summers in Alexandria with his family were particularly special to him-often spent spearfishing in the Mediterranean Sea. It was on one of those beautiful summer days on the beach that he met the love of his life, Ikhlas "Bouva" Khalil Georgy, whom he would marry on December 25, 1955.

In January of 1967, Youssef and Bouva immigrated to the United States with their two young sons, Habib and Michael, to pursue a better life for their family. A passionate swimmer, Youssef requested one thing: to live near the ocean. They made their home in Providence, Rhode Island, where he had to restart his medical career as an intern at Miriam Hospital. He then joined Rhode Island Hospital where he completed his residency and fellowship in internal medicine and cardiology. Reflecting his compassion for those in need, he also worked at the state penitentiary and in clinics in underserved parts of Providence, treating those who were often overlooked.

Youssef and his family eventually moved to Cumberland, where he established his medical practice in internal medicine and cardiology. He served generations of patients with unwavering dedication, continuing to care for others until the age of 90-a testament to his extraordinary work ethic and deep sense of purpose.

Youssef appreciated his time in Rhode Island, where his avid spearfishing in Narragansett reminded him of summers in Alexandria. In addition, he perfected his squash game, becoming a top player in the state for a number of years. Youssef and Bouva's beach house became a gathering place filled with laughter, love, and lasting memories. A generous host and an even more generous soul, Youssef was admired for his kindness, integrity, courage and quick wit. His presence lit up every room, leaving a lasting impression on all who met him.

Above all, Youssef's proudest role was that of a father and grandfather ("Geddo"). His family was his greatest joy and lifelong motivation. He offered his love unconditionally, his support unwaveringly, and his wisdom freely. His legacy of respect, humility, warmth, humor, and resilience lives on in his children and grandchildren.

Youssef is survived by his sons, Habib Y. Gorgi and his wife Susan C. Gorgi of Providence, and Michael Y. Georgy of the United Arab Emirates, as well as his six beloved grandchildren: Katherine, Youssef, Alexander, and Madeleine Gorgi, and Habib and Youssef Georgy. He is also survived by his sister, Isis H. Gorgi of Montreal, Canada, and many cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins in Egypt, Canada and the US. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Bouva and his siblings George H. Gorgi, Sophie H. Gorgi, and Badie H. Gorgi-each of whom held a special place in his heart.

Dr. Youssef H. Georgy lived a life defined by his faith, compassion, dedication, and love. His was a life well lived, and his memory will be forever treasured by all who knew him.

Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 67 Cole Avenue, Providence, R.I. 02906
