Dwan Lee (Thomas) Moore of Bethel, North Carolina passed away peacefully on Friday, September 5, 2025, at the age of 77.
Dwan was born on March 10, 1948, becoming the only child of Lizzie Whitehurst Thomas and Floyd Jennings Thomas. She was raised in Bethel and graduated from Bethel High School. From there, she went on to earn her bachelor's degree in sociology from Meredith College in Raleigh, NC. She later worked in probation and parole and as a social worker.
Her true passions, however, were her horses and dogs, and specifically horseback riding. She spent many weekends over many years at horse shows, qualifying for and showing in the Arabian National Championships on multiple occasions. She parlayed her passion into a small business selling horse tack and custom show apparel.
Dwan was preceded in death by her parents, Lizzie and Floyd, as well as by her biological half-sisters, Mary Alice Spain and Meredith Norman. She is survived by her daughter, Sara Moore, and the father of her child, Bill Moore. Dwan is also survived by her dear cousin, Trudy Gulley, as well as numerous other cherished cousins.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 22nd, 2025 at Bethel Cemetery, 29610 West Lewis Street, Bethel. Flowers may be sent to Carlisle Funeral Home, 701 Hospital Drive, Tarboro, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Arabian Horse Foundation (https://www.thearabianhorsefoundation.org/donate) or Carolina Border Collie Rescue (https://www.cbcr.org/donate).
