Dwayne T. Gilchrist, Sr., a man whose life was as richly woven with humor, hard work, and unwavering spirit as the city where he was born and where he lived his final days, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2026, at his home in Syracuse, NY, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on February 17, 1962, in Syracuse, Dwayne embodied the heart and soul of his hometown throughout his 64 years.
Known affectionately as a jokester, Dwayne's laughter was a constant melody among those who knew him. Yet beneath that playful exterior was a man of formidable perseverance, marked by a stubbornness that carried him through life's challenges. His identity was deeply personal and vibrant; in his youth, he fancied himself both Popeye and Superman, invincible and full of daring. In his quieter moments, his spirit found solace in the songs of Elvis Presley, while Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Byrd” echoed as his anthem—a testament to his free and fiery nature.
Dwayne was a dedicated worker, spending over three years of his career employed at Amazon, where his work ethic continued to shine. Before that, he was known as a master roofer and truly a jack of all trades, skilled in many crafts. His time serving his country in the National Guard was a chapter of honor in his life, reflecting his dedication not only to his family but also to the greater good.
He leaves behind a large and loving family, a living legacy of six daughters—Becky (Joel) Wentworth, Christina Gilchrist, Amanda Gilchrist, Machlia Gilchrist, Cynthia Gilchrist, and Keyonna Ogilsbie—and five sons—Jake (Adrianna) Gilchrist, Joshua Gilchrist, Michael Gilchrist, Matthew Gilchrist, and Dwayne T. Gilchrist, Jr. His joy was multiplied in his several grandchildren, great grandchildren who continue to carry his spirit forward. His familial bonds spanned further with three brothers—James Gilchrist, Bucky Gilchrist, and Robert Gilchrist—and two sisters, Debra Gilchrist and Patricia (Patrick) Morris, all of whom hold his memory close.
He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Jeanette Daignault, whose memory lives on in the hearts of all who knew the family.
A visitation to honor and remember Dwayne will be held on March 16, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, located at 705 N Main St, Syracuse, NY 13212. It is a moment for all who loved him to gather, share stories, smile, and perhaps hear an Elvis tune or two, celebrating a life lived fully and fiercely.
Dwayne T. Gilchrist, Sr. was more than a man; he was a presence—a force of nature who inspired laughter, respect, and love. His legacy of strength, humor, and deep familial devotion will echo in the lives of all he touched, as enduring and heartfelt as the timeless music he cherished.
