Dwight Sheftall Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Northside Chapel Funeral Directors and Crematory on Jul. 17, 2025.
Dwight Moody Sheftall Jr. passed away peacefully at home in the early hour of Sunday, July 13, 2025. Dwight was born in Atlanta, GA on December 20, 1939 to the late Dwight Moody Sheftall, Sr. and Dorothy Sheftall His childhood years were spent in both Atlanta, GA and Jacksonville, FL. He graduated from Northside High School (Atlanta) in 1957, and later received a Bachelor of Industrial Engineering degree from Georgia Tech in 1962. He was an active member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force after college and started a career as an Air Force officer. Dwight attended pilot training at Craig Air Force Base in Selma, AL. His Air Force service included the 2223rd Navigation Training Squadron at McGuire Air Force base, located in New Jersey, and active service during Vietnam as a combat pilot in the AC47 Gunship. During this time, he served more than 200 combat missions to his credit. In 1967, he received the US Air Medal with 8 oak leaf clusters. This medal represented meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight. Dwight was extremely proud of his military service. After leaving the Air Force, he transitioned into his next career phase as a commercial airline pilot. He spent 20 plus years with Eastern Airlines and another ten with American Trans Air, retiring in 1999. He married his high school sweetheart, Leslie Morrison in 1964. In 2024, they celebrated 60 years of sharing an amazing life together. Dwight was an avid runner and track club member during most of his life. He ran 5K, 10K, and many marathons, often winning in his age group. He completed at least 25 Peachtree Road Races in Atlanta. In addition to running, He was fan of Formula 1 racing, and cars in general. His history knowledge of both military and world events was amazing. He loved studying maps and weather, and always had an atlas nearby. Listening to good jazz music or coaching youth soccer, Dwight completed anything he started with detail and diligence. Along with his parents, Dwight is preceded in death by his daughter, Leslie Elizabeth Sheftall; sister, Dorothy Mollnow; brother-in-law, Marvin Mollnow. Surviving family include: Two sons, William Sheftall and Andrew Sheftall, daughter-in-law Lauren Clarke, granddaughter Annabella Sheftall, along with his wife Leslie. As he wished, a private family service and in-urnment will be held at a later date. In-lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute to a favorite charity or the Vietnam Veteran Organization.
