Dwight Williams Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sunset Vista Funeral Home, Cemetery & Crematory on Jan. 14, 2026.
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the unexpected passing of Dwight D. Williams, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, Army Veteran and retired firefighter, known for his steadfast loyalty, dedication to service and ability to lighten the mood with his laugh and a joke and love for the outdoors, passed away on January 11,2026 at the age of 78, in Yuma, Arizona.

Born on March 4, 1947, and raised in Madison, Wiconsin, Dwight was a man of integrity and humor, earning him the affectionate nickname, "Dudley Do-Right" among his friends and colleagues. He was known for his steadfast loyalty, dedication to service and ability to lighten the mood with his laugh and quick wit. After bravely serving his country in the U.S. Army, Dwight began a distinquished career as a firefighter, where he exemplified courage and commitment for 28 years before his retirement from the Madison Fire Department.

Dwight's life was defined by service, humor and a deep appreciaton for nature. An avid sportsman with a passion for golf, he found peace in the quiet woods while hunting and enjoyed countless hours of fishing on the local lakes. His greatest catches were often outdone only by the size of the accompanying fish tales.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Candy, together since high school, and married for over 58 years. Their partnership was a testament to an enduring love story and mutual support throughout the years. He is leaving behind his loving children, son Bob (Amy) Williams, and daughter, Tammy Depies, who will carry forward his legacy of strength, honor and kindness. He is also survived by his four grandsons, Jackson and Sam Depies and Jamison and Deacon Williams, as well as many other family and friends.

A memorial will be planned at a later date.

Dwight may be gone, but his laughter and lore will live on in the memories of those left behind. He will be profoundly missed but his spirit, characterized by duty, humor and deep love for family and nature will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. The world is a little less bright today, our loss is heaven's gain and he will truly be missed.

I just met Dwight in 2025 when we became permanent campers at Wilderness in Montello. We were lucky enough to be right across the path from them. I have lost both my parents so when they arrived to their place from Yuma surrounded by family, life and laughter, I knew this was the perfect place for us. Candi instantly loved us and we were welcomed into the family. Scott would drive home from work and walk right over to their porch where we would sit and share both laughter and tears. I would always be up early and D was always sitting on the front porch peacefully enjoying life and sometimes doing his required rehab exercises I am forever grateful I got to hear his many stories, feel like I had a dad again and get to know him and be inspired by his love of life, birds, deer, golf, fishing and love of Candi and his family. He was so generous, kind, peaceful and taught us so much in the little time we got to know him. I am forever grateful I got to see and know Dwight. Camping will never be the same. Love you family
