Earl Frederick Beattie, a man who lived with purpose and found joy in the simple beauty of the world around him, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2025, at Green Acres of Ionia, with his loved ones by his side. Born on March 23, 1932, in Saranac, Michigan, he was the beloved son of Lyle and Hazel (Lobdell) Beattie.
Earl's success in the Navy was a testament to his unwavering work ethic and discipline. A proud veteran, he honorably served aboard the USS Abnaki (ATF-96), fulfilling his duties with steadfast dedication and integrity. While his time in the Navy strengthened his commitment to service, it was his inherent perseverance and discipline that truly defined his journey-guiding him throughout his life.
Beyond his military service, Earl was a man who truly thrived in the great outdoors. He was a farmer at heart, a steward of the land, and found peace in the rhythm of nature-hunting in the quiet of the woods, casting a line in still waters, and tending to his fields with unwavering dedication. He especially loved riding his side-by-side to check on things, making his rounds across the land he cared for so deeply, always ensuring everything was just as it should be.
Earl's dedication to hard work and community extended beyond the farm. He served as Keene Township Clerk and Supervisor, later becoming the Equalization Director for Ionia County. His leadership and service were driven by his deep sense of responsibility and commitment to the people and land he cherished.
The greatest blessing of Earl's life was the love of his life, Margaret Jean Tuinstra. They were married on April 22, 1955, beginning a lifetime of adventures side by side. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion, sharing nearly 70 wonderful years of marriage. They found endless joy in the outdoors, whether tending to their garden, splitting wood, or working on projects together. From quiet mornings outside to long days spent working side by side, nature was always at the heart of their time together. Their love shined brightest in these everyday moments-a partnership built on hard work, companionship, and the quiet understanding that comes from a lifetime spent side by side.
Earl had an undeniable love for animals, the land, and the world he created with Margaret. From a young age, he was deeply involved in 4-H, where he developed his passion for agriculture and livestock. He later gave back by judging fairs and mentoring young farmers. His dedication to the next generation of agricultural leaders extended to his role as President of the Saranac FFA Alumni, where he worked to support and inspire those following in his footsteps. Whether working the farm, mowing the lawn, or simply soaking in the beauty of nature, he lived with a deep appreciation for life's most honest and hardworking pleasures. Above all, he cherished his family and the home they built together, finding his greatest joy in their love.
He is survived by Margaret Jean Beattie; his son, Steve Beattie (Sue); his sister, Erma Beattie (and her dear friend Connie Koster). Sisters-in-law Elaine Lamberts (John) and Linda Tunistra. Earl was a proud grandfather to Nikki Baker (Andy) and their daughters, Evelyn and Isla, as well as Tori Weaver (Nick) and their daughters, Maddelyn and Lainey, who will forever carry his wisdom, love, and unwavering spirit in their hearts. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle and Hazel Beattie, George & Jennie Tuinstra, and his daughter, Shari Tindall (Tim).
Earl's legacy is one of resilience, love, and a deep connection to the land and those he held dear. His presence will be deeply missed, but his stories, his lessons, and his love will live on in the lives he touched.
A celebration of Earl's life will be held, 1 PM, Friday, February 7, 2025, at Lake Funeral Home in Saranac, MI, Visitation will be at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 PM-7 PM and on Friday 12:00 PM until time of services.
