Funeral service for Earl "Baron" Fain IV will be held Tuesday, August 6 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Philip's Church. His family will receive visitors on Monday, August 5 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Stuhr's Downtown Chapel at 232 Calhoun St. Born November 1, 1962 to Kelly Erwin Fain and Earl Fain III, Baron was raised in Dallas, Texas, along with his younger sister Virginia Elizabeth Fain. Baron spent summer and Christmas vacations at his family's Bluff Plantation in Yemassee, South Carolina, where he fell in love with the Lowcountry. He attended Deerfield Academy. While at the University of the South he joined the Kappa Alpha Order graduating with a bachelor's degree in British History. He worked on Capitol Hill for several years before pursuing a graduate degree in foreign affairs from the University of Virginia. In 1992 he moved to Charleston to join the Ben Silver Corporation as the director of institutional sales. His 27-year career allowed him to meld his passion of history, the study of flags, and heraldry with the traditions of numerous clubs, institutions, and organizations. He was a devoted member of St. Philip's Church, and a regular attendee of the Wednesday morning 1928 Prayer Book Morning Prayer services in the St. Philip's Chapel, the Men's Ministry Luncheon and belonged to many Anglican groups. Baron was also a member, leader, and founder of many fraternal, social, and patriotic societies, a few of which include the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, The Charleston Club, Fort Sumter Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the St. David's Society. He served honorably for many years in the signal corps of the South Carolina State Guard and attained the rank of staff sergeant. He was also a founder of the Charleston Mercury newspaper. He met and married Courtenay Haden McCormick in 2006. Their son Taliaferro Rice Fain "Tradd" was born in 2010. Baron was dedicated to history and tradition, but he will most be remembered for his strong faith, his love for his family, and his devoted friendship and genuine interest in others. He was a leader, a mentor, and a servant. In lieu of flowers, friends may make out checks to Mitchell Park RSW Athletic Program. Please mail contributions to 110 Fishburne St., Charleston, S.C., 29403. All proceeds go to benefit or sponsor a child who plays sports for Mitchell RSW Athletic Program for an opportunity to be able to see a National Football League game in December during which the Tampa Bay Buccaneers play the Indiana Colts.

God bless you, Courtenay and Tradd! Baron and I met many years ago in Charleston, and only later discovered that this excellent man was in fact a distant cousin - we are both from the Conway family of Virginia. Shocked to learn of his passing - a very fine gentleman. Our deepest condolences from Marie and I.

I am devastated. I grieve for Baron, and Courtenay, and Tradd, and I grieve for all of us. Baron was so important to all of us in so many ways. He was a great father and husband. He was a great friend who was so well informed on so many issues of heraldry, and history. I often just listened and was impressed with his knowledge even though it was over my head. Baron was a gentle man, never seeking confrontation. He would state an opinion and it was up to the listener to accept it or not. He was exceptional in all the clubs and societies to which he belonged. His dedication to his duties and detail as an Orangeman were exemplary. He was an important member of so many orders, clubs and societies of Charleston and elsewhere, and his opinions were always sought. He was so very proud of Tradd. The last time Baron I met at the Carolina Yacht Club we talked about George Washington's "Rules of Civility & Decent Behavior" Baron said Tradd knew of this document, and he dressed as Washington at a history pageant at school with the knowledge George Washington was his ancestor. Baron was not going to attend the St. Johns meeting in Cashiers, he had plans to visit a ranch out West with the family so they could enjoy being together. Courtenay was the love of his life, and they have been deprived of growing old together, and watching Tradd become the fine man he will surely be.
Baron's passing leaves an empty space in my existence, he was always someone you assumed would be there ready to discuss whatever the topic of the day might be.

He is gone.

I will miss him.

What a wonderful man Baron Fain was! Good natured and always willing to help. The type of proud American we see too few of these days. Baron was so fun in his stories of the past and how they still mean something to us today. We could always rely on Baron to give us the interesting details on any historical event. I looked forward to his educational emails! A natural combination of Texas Independence with Old South charm and reverence.

He will be missed by KA's, Magnolia Mason's, countless other groups, and several dozen close friends he (wisely) left behind in Washington, DC, among others. God Bless my friend. Keep an eye on us. Epp

I would like to express my sincerest condolences to Baron's family.

I never had the pleasure of meeting him in person, but I have corresponded with him somewhat regularly over the past several years. Baron helped me design some club ties for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League Honor Guard, the gentlemen who present debutantes at the DSOL Presentation Ball. I have attached a photo of these handsome ties.

He also assisted me with some tie designs for other Dallas gentlemen's clubs. We were in the process of getting a new tie design approved for the Idlewild Club in Dallas, of which Baron was also a member. The design was his suggestion and was close to his heart due to his family's extensive history with that organization. He produced a different tie for Idlewild some years ago and hoped this new design would be more recognizable and meaningful to the Club's members.

His loss is tremendous for all who had the pleasure of interacting with him. I am grateful to have known him even through our correspondence, and my thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Baron was a great friend at Deerfield Academy, and we decided to live next door on the same floor our last two years there (we were next door by chance our first year). I remember his passion for flags and for politics. He was as honorable and upright as they come. My condolences to the Fain family. He was a fantastic guy.
