I saw Earl quite often at the Intergroup office. Earl devoted much of his personal time and resources in service to others. He didn't just talk about gratitude for his life; he lived it every day with the work he freely volunteered so that others could rebuild their lives. I will miss seeing him, and he will continue to be a fine example to me of the importance of helping others.

Earl, may you find everlasting peace in heaven, with pool games, coffee, and neighborly chats with all folks who became your dear friends so easily. Thank you for who you are, a good man.

To the Family - I am a first cousin who never had the pleasure of really knowing Earl. I did meet him when we both worked at Bank of Virginia. I found him to be a pleasant, personable person. My prayers are with the family and perhaps I will meet him again in the great beyond.

an old friend
March 20, 2009
I guess you could say that Earl was my first crush. I was only about 10 years old and I couldn't believe this 'older' fellow was coming to the house to see ME! Actually there were two legitimate reasons why Earl came to our house. One, his friend was coming to see my older sister and because we lived in a tiny house and I was apparently 'in the way', Earl came to keep me out of the living room by teaching me how to play chess. Oh how I loved Friday nights and my chess date. Later he admitted that the other reason was because he and his friend were 'city boys' and it was risky coming into the County to see a girl. Earl was his friends back-up in case they were jumped by the County boys. Everyone knows what a good dancer Earl was. What you may not know is that his dancing nearly got him in trouble with a preacher. There was our local version of American Bandstand and some of the kids decided Earl should take this girl who could also dance like crazy. The only problem was that her Daddy was a preacher and often preached about the sins of dancing. Apparently no one thought Earl needed to know this so it wasn't until they were on the way home that the girl warned him that if her Daddy found out, there'd be trouble. Her Daddy didn't watch the TV program but others did and they couldn't wait to tell that the preacher's daughter was dancing on TV. And then there were the tea parties! We 'hired' Earl to do some painting at our house. Now Earl's was a great painter but Lord knows he took his sweet time. We joked that we were going to claim him as a dependent on our taxes. But our young granddaughter thought Earl had come to the house to play with her. If it was too damp to paint the trim, or too early, or if he hadn't had enough coffee, whatever excuse he could find, Earl would sit at my kitchen table and enjoy the finest tea party a two year old girl could host. I can't tell you how many tiny cups of water he drank, ever the gentleman. My Mama and Daddy loved Earl. Whenever he painted at their house he spent plenty of time sitting at the kitchen table sharing stories and just talking over a cup of coffee. We will all miss Earl. His chess games, his dancing, his tea parties, and his conversations.

I was sad to hear of Earl's passing. He was a man who always tried to pass it on to the next person who needed a helping hand. He will be missed by the people who looked to him for support. My thoughts are with his family and friends.
