I met Ed when he was working for All Pro Paving, in Grand Terrace, CA. His business partner was Bill Smith. I worked for LM Contracting, Inc., in Redlands, CA. Every job that required concrete paving, we'd call Ed and Bill. I went to his home once, out in Reche Canyon. He organized a celebrity golf tournament, one year, and invited 150 of his friends from the NFL. This was 35 years ago, so the only players I can remember were Dick Butkis and Bill Kellogg. It was a beautiful day and he raised a lot of money for his charity. Ed was such a nice and personable man. I always liked him. I just found out about his passing 2 years ago, and I am deeply saddened. I have nothing but good memories of him. I still think of him fairly often, even after all these years. My condolences to his family.

We lived across the street from Ed and Niney in La Jolla back in 1977/79, and I recall a dinner at their house with Ed White and Gary Danielson. Every time I see Gary on TV I think of that night, our daughters playing, how nice the family was. It's also very sad that it seems both our daughters born in 1972 are deceased, Amy and Dana.
I extend my deepest sympathy.

To the family, many, many friends, and fans of this great person who played and loved the game of football. Mr. Ed Flanagan. Mr. Ed Flanagan was a center for the Detroit Lions. He was chosen for four Pro Bowls and is a member of the Lions’ all-time team. Mr. Ed Flanagan had a great career in football and in his community. May you find comfort in your wealth of fond memories together with Mr. Ed Flanagan. May the love and many, many special memories you shared with your devoted loved one show how much your life was touched by him. May the God of comfort bless your grieving hearts with strength, loving kindness and peace as the world copes with the loss of Mr. Ed Flanagan. He had a tremendous career and accomplishment.

Stalwart on those solid Lions' offensive lines. 4 Pro Bowl selections, during an era that had many excellent centers and defensive opponents, is indicative of Ed's toughness and greatness. Rest in peace, Ed.
