Ed Luukkonen

Edwin J. Luukkonen, age 80, of Park Rapids, Minnesota, passed away on Friday, January 23, 2026. Devoted husband of almost 60 years to Carol (Kleinke). Loving father to Liza (Steve S); Heidi (Brian J) and Erik; dear grandpa to Sydney and Cameron; and caring brother to Lucille.

Ed Was born on November 3, 1945, to first-generation Finnish immigrant Gustaf Hjalmar and Anna (Jacobson) Luukkonen. He grew up on the family farm near Sebeka, where he enjoyed playing town baseball in his free time. Ed graduated from Sebeka High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Education at St. Cloud State University.

Ed was a lifelong educator, teaching social studies and driver's education. He also coached for the Elk River Junior High School Wrestling Program. He enjoyed the challenge of middle schoolers as it "kept things interesting"-even employing the Heimlich on one occasion to save a choking student.

Ed enjoyed fishing, hunting, baseball, and hiking. He was an active member of the Lion's Club in both Elk River and Park Rapids. His easy-going demeanor and laid-back attitude made him a joy to be around. Never one to brag, his skills and accomplishments would have to be observed firsthand or perhaps revealed as an off-hand anecdote in a story he shared.

A celebration of Edwin's life will take place at his beloved Park Rapids lake home in the spring/summer of 2026. Memorial can be made to the Alzheimer's Association (Alz.org)
