On the night of October 4th 2024, Ede Elex Bogdanyi died peacefully at his home in Fairfield, Connecticut with Barbara, his wife of 51 years, by his side.
He was born to Frank and Margit Bogdanyi in Hungary on September 2nd, 1940, the youngest of 5 brothers.
Ede spoke with warm memories of his childhood in the Hungarian countryside. However by the time he was fifteen years old, his parents had died and the Hungarian Revolution had begun. During the revolution, he set out on his own to escape the violence and start a new life. He often reflected on his days spent walking through forests and fields in order to make it to safety. At sixteen years old, Ede was working in a Coal Mine in England. He also worked in a foundry and did iron work, often seven days a week for months at a time. At twenty-one, Ede owned his own home in England. Years later, he legally immigrated to America and started a successful painting business. With the money he earned from painting, he followed his dream of opening a bar.
"Ede's Place" was a popular social hub for 28 years in Norwalk, the town he called home for many years after selling his house in Redding. He also opened an Inn in Hobart, New York, renovated a rental property there, built a hunting cabin, and bought horses and land, all while running Ede's Place in Norwalk.
Ede was an incredibly hard worker and honest man who helped countless people that were in need. He always stuck up for those that couldn't do it for themselves. He had a very quick wit but not for a moment did he suffer fools. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, listening to Hungarian music, and cooking, the last of which he was great at. Above all else, Ede enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, all of whom he cherished.
In 2017, he retired and moved to Fairfield where he lived out the rest of his days surrounded by his loving family.
Ede is reunited with his parents, his brothers Steve, Rudi, Frank, Joe, and his son, Martin.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Bogdanyi, his sons Paul and Ed Bogdanyi, his grandson, Shane Bogdanyi, Daughter In Law, Jeannie Bogdanyi, as well as many nieces and nephews.
His journey started across an ocean. When he left Hungary his parents were gone and he would never again be with all his brothers at the same time. It was something that always caused him heartache.
In his final days he confessed that he was "ready to go" and died as he lived, honorably and on his own terms. After 84 years, he returned home.
At his request a small service was held at Riverside Cemetery in Norwalk, Friday October 11th.
