Edith Gay Bruce

Athens - Edith Gay Bruce, 99, of Athens, died February 18, 2026 at her daughters residence in Chauncey where she has lived since 2013.

Born June 30, 1926 in Arlington. WV, she was the daughter of the late Phillip and Della Siers Weekley. Edith was a longtime Athens County resident having graduated from Chauncey-Dover High School. She was formerly employed in Huntington West Virginia and McBees in Athens. She enjoyed camping, doing yard work and going to yard sales. She attended Poston United Methodist Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir. More than anything else, she loved all of her grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Gunter; three grandsons, Larry Rutter, Lance (Lori) Rutter, and Jeff (Becky) Enevoldsen; five great grandchildren, Molly and Jack Rutter and Jeremy, Jacob and Josh Enevoldsen.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Bruce; one daughter, Diana Enevoldsen; one granddaughter, Lisa Enevoldsen; son-in-law, Randy Gunter; eight brothers, Forrest, Jess, Jennings, Robert, Don, Hoyt, Ezra and Victor and one sister, Geneva Gabriel.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Monday, February 23, 2026 at Hughes Funeral Home in Athens with Jimmy Blackwell officiating. Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM until the time of service. Burial will be Athens Memory Gardens.
