Edith Greenstone, of Sioux City, passed away on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, just shy of her 99th birthday. She was born on March 25, 1927, in Sioux City to S. Ben and Jean (Gordon) Gelfand.

Edith graduated from Central High School in Sioux City and Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She married Morton Greenstone on June 27, 1948. They lived in Sioux City, where they raised three children.

Edith was one of the founders of Book People, a local independent bookstore in Sioux City that continues to be a beloved resource for readers and travelers of all ages. Her involvement in the bookstore was not merely a professional endeavor, but a reflection of her deep love for reading. She also taught English as a Second Language through community centers. Edith served on the board of the Boys and Girls Home and Family Services of Sioux City and supported this and other community organizations.

Throughout her life, family remained at the forefront of Edith's priorities, and she took great pride in her role as mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

She is survived by her daughters: Ellen Greenstone and Ann (Jim) Hoffman; three grandchildren: Aaron (Kaitlyn) Hoffman, Adam (Maria) Hoffman, and Dory Bennett; three great grandchildren: Edith "Edie,” Oscar, and Esme Hoffman. Edith also leaves behind her sister, Miriam Sanders; her brother, Jay Gelfand; and her late son’s partner, Gerry DeSilva.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Morton Greenstone; her son, David Greenstone; her son-in-law, Roger Bennett; and her brother-in-law, David Sanders.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, March 13, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., at Mt. Sinai Jewish Cemetery in Sioux City. Memorial donations may be directed to the Boys and Girls Home in Sioux City or to a charity of your choice in honor of Edith. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
