Edith McCoy Powell

Mrs. Edith McCoy Powell, 89, of Gastonia, died peacefully after a long illness on Monday, February 27, 2012. She was born in 1922 in Mecklenburg County, a daughter of the late Lamar Clifford McCoy. Mrs. Powell was the epitome of a sweet, southern lady who was firmly dedicated and supportive of her family. She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of Gastonia, being involved in many activities there. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Survivors of Mrs. Powell include her daughter and son-in-law, Glenda P. and Jim R. Bannister; son and daughter-in-law, David L. and Leslie Powell, all of Gastonia; grandsons, Glenn E. Stevens of Lake Wylie, SC; Eric S. Stevens and wife Stephanie of Tacoma, WA; Robert A. Powell of Simpsonville, SC; great-grandson, Trevor Stevens of Lake Wylie, SC; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, R. Glenn Powell, by a brother and a sister. The family will receive friends Thursday, March 1, 2012 from 1:00pm to 2:00pm at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia. The funeral service will be held at 2:00pm, Thursday in Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors with Dr. James Westmoreland and Rev. Phil McCoy officiating. Interment will be held privately for the family at Gaston Memorial Park.
