Mrs. Edith McCoy Powell, 89, of Gastonia, died peacefully after a long illness on Monday, February 27, 2012. She was born in 1922 in Mecklenburg County, a daughter of the late Lamar Clifford McCoy. Mrs. Powell was the epitome of a sweet, southern lady who was firmly dedicated and supportive of her family. She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of Gastonia, being involved in many activities there. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Survivors of Mrs. Powell include her daughter and son-in-law, Glenda P. and Jim R. Bannister; son and daughter-in-law, David L. and Leslie Powell, all of Gastonia; grandsons, Glenn E. Stevens of Lake Wylie, SC; Eric S. Stevens and wife Stephanie of Tacoma, WA; Robert A. Powell of Simpsonville, SC; great-grandson, Trevor Stevens of Lake Wylie, SC; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, R. Glenn Powell, by a brother and a sister. The family will receive friends Thursday, March 1, 2012 from 1:00pm to 2:00pm at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia. The funeral service will be held at 2:00pm, Thursday in Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors with Dr. James Westmoreland and Rev. Phil McCoy officiating. Interment will be held privately for the family at Gaston Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, PO Box 218, Gastonia, NC 28053 or to Catawba Lands Conservancy, 105 W. Morehead St., Charlotte, NC 28202, www.catawbalands.org. Condolence messages may be made online at www.McLeanFuneral.com. McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia is serving the family of Mrs. Powell.
