Edith Schulz Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Noblin Funeral Service of Belen on Mar. 5, 2026.
Edith "Edie" Cargo Schulz, age 89, passed into glory on February 22, 2026, surrounded by loved ones at her home in Belen.
Born October 8, 1936, Edie's happiest early memories took root under the vast skies of El Paso, Texas, and Chinle, Arizona. A lively redhead with Shirley Temple curls, she was her father's "All Time Heartthrob." After her parents' divorce, she moved frequently with her mother, who worked as a live-in cook in wealthy California households-an experience that later defined Edie's own radical hospitality.
After studying music at Houghton College, Edie married Paul Schulz in 1960 and settled in inner-city Detroit. She poured herself into the community, hosting block club meetings and Bible studies, alongside professional roles as a piano accompanist for Detroit Parks & Recreation and a field interviewer for the U-M Survey Research Center. A longtime member of Central Alliance Church, she served as organist, Sunday School Director, and Bible Quiz Team leader. Her Tudor home was a haven for guests and those in need of extended stays; she also tenderly cared for her bedridden mother there during her final seven years.
Once her children were grown, Edie followed the pull of childhood memories back to the Southwest. She drove across the country with her German Shepherd, Sage, to build a home at the foot of the Manzano Mountains. There, she found community with her Tierra Grande neighbors and as a member of Redeemer Church in Los Lunas. She loved to hike, tend her horses, and study the Bible. Even in that remote place, her door remained open as a landing spot for grandchildren in transition or newcomers seeking refuge.
Edith's family is grateful to those who cared for her as her vigor declined, notably her granddaughter Micah, neighbors Beverlie Hamby, Stacy Shaw and Jody Gardner, and friends Ann Dollahite, Kate Goldsmith and Sue King, who provided weekly spiritual encouragement and her favorite deviled eggs.
Edie was intense, driven, and-as she'd concede with a laugh-increasingly opinionated. She served her Lord faithfully, holding fast to her convictions, and is now set free to enjoy His presence for eternity.
She is deeply mourned by her children, Gwen Jachim (Ron), Paul Schulz (Stefanie), and Gayle Ataceri (Michael); grandchildren, Nathaniel, Peter & Amy Jachim, Kristina, Erica & Meghan Schulz, Isaiah, Caleb, Micah, and Isabella Ataceri; and great-grandchildren, Henry & Maggie Jachim, Dante & Jordan Soriano.
A private memorial gathering will be held for Edith at a later date.
