"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadth me beside the still waters."
It was pleasing to Edith's body and soul after overcoming so many illnesses in order to continue life with family and friends, to close her eyes and rest from labor; to look towards sunset and slip into rest knowing at the close of the day she would be in the presence of God. On Saturday, June 8, 2024, holding her daughter Kimberly and son-in- law, Markkey hands, Edith Gilmore Simpson departed this life at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital in Lynchburg, Virginia. Edith was the seventh of eight children.
Edith was born July 24, 1936, to the late Cullen Sr. and Alpine Gilmore. At an early age she joined St. Michael Baptist Church and later in life served as the President of the Pastor's Aide Program until her health started to decline. She received her education in Charlotte County public schools, graduating from Central High School.
Edith held several jobs until she found the one that brought lots of devoted friends at Clover Yarns, Inc. in Clover, Virginia. She was employed 26 years until her health started to decline. Edith's passion was opening up her home and serving food to family and friends. The sunshine of her life were her great-grandchildren, who brought her plenty of joy. Edith was preceded in death by her husband, George Carl Simpson; loving daughter, Donna Lynne Simpson; parents, Cullen Sr. and Apline Gilmore; brothers, Marion Gilmore, Cullen Gilmore, Jr., and Curtis Gilmore; and sisters, Josephine Wilcox and Mamie Gilmore.
Edith leaves to cherish: her loving and devoted daughters, Kimberly Simpson Warren of Drakes Branch, VA, and Audrey Simpson; one loving and devoted son-in-law, Antonio Markkey Warren of Drakes Branch, VA; one granddaughter, Brittney Warren (Damond); five great- grandchildren, Ijayah Warren, Aeryk Easter, Bre'Yanna, Da'Meir and Ka'Riyah; one brother, Louis Gilmore of Keysville, VA; one loving and devoted sister, Charlotte (Ann) Gregory of Drakes Branch, VA; sisters- in-law, Lenora Gilmore of Drakes Branch, VA and Ephenia Pippen of Catonsville, MD; devoted nieces, Karen Gregory-Williams, Delphine Watson, and Debra Gilmore; devoted nephews, James Gregory, Sr., Ivan Gilmore, Page Gilmore, Roger Gilmore, and Billy Canada, special and devoted caregivers, Elaine Friend Walton, Catherine Boyd, Louise Thompson, Joyce Parker, Karen Roberts, and Shannon Hamlette; devoted and loving neighbors who was like her children to her and were always there before she could hang up the phone, Alma and Larry Tucker; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Grandchildren Ijayah and Aeryk were also special caregivers, and we could not have made it without you two.
Funeral Service for Mrs. Edith Gilmore Simpson will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 12 Noon at St. Michael Baptist Church, 4160 Drakes Main Street, Drakes Branch, VA. The remains will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Final care and professional services entrusted to the Smithson Brothers Mortuary, Chase City, VA.
