Edith Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by E M Coots' Sons Inc Funeral Home on Mar. 11, 2026.
Edith L. Smith, 79, passed away on Monday, March 9, 2026, at HCA Florida Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. A native of Jeffersonville, Indiana, Edith was born on June 26, 1946, to the late Marvin and Edna Reardon.

Edith was a woman of deep faith and community spirit. As a member of the chapel at Tower Lakes in Lake Wales, Florida, she was a fixture in the social activities and dedicated her time to helping produce the community newsletters. Her heart for service was lifelong, spanning from her time as a volunteer at Clark Memorial Hospital to her final days at Astoria Senior Living, where she was always the first to lend a hand to staff and fellow residents alike.

To those who knew her, Edith was defined by her sense of humor and her love of games. Whether playing Mahjong or Euchre, she lived by a firm philosophy: "Play to win; or don't play." She was a formidable opponent who never took it easy on a newcomer, believing that the best way to honor the game was to play it well. Above all else, her greatest joy was her family, and she cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Fred James Smith; her parents; and her sister, Carolyn East.

Edith is survived by her daughters, Paula Dalby (Mitch) of Huson, Montana, and Pam Clark (Tim) of Nashville, Indiana; her brother, James Reardon; and three grandchildren who will miss her dearly.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at E.M. Coots' Sons Funeral Home with cremation to follow. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until the service at the Funeral Home. Following the cremation, she will be laid to rest next to her husband at Walnut Ridge Cemetery.
