Edith Lorene (Hoyt) Voorhees, 103, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2025 at Presbyterian Manor in Emporia, KS.
Edith was born on February 15, 1922 in Lyon County, KS to parents Charles F. & Mary M. (Stewart) Hoyt. After graduating from Hartford High School in 1938, she attended the Kansas State Teachers College (ESU) in Emporia, KS. Edith taught in Shaw Creek & Summit Schools in Lyon Co. for 2 years and later continued work in education cooking and serving as the lunchroom manager at Madison Schools for 19 years.
She was united in marriage to Robert O. Voorhees on August 28, 1941, in Fayetteville, AR. After Robert returned from his military service, they moved back to the Madison area. After celebrating 50 years together, Robert preceded Edith in death on Jan. 21, 1992.
Also preceding Edith is her son, Harold Voorhees; sisters, Irene Comeaux and Ellen Hockanson; brothers, Harold Hoyt and James Hoyt.
Edith is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Anderson of Wichita, KS and Janet Emch (George) of Emporia, KS; five grandchildren, Christine Scott (Brian), Karen Anderson-Lain (Brian), Brad Emch (Jen), Keith Anderson (Leta), & Andy Emch; 5 great-grandchildren, Aiden Anderson, Kaia Anderson, Ryan Emch, Tyler Emch, & Evan Emch; sister-in-law, Pam Hoyt; and several nieces, nephews, and countless other family members and friends.
Funeral services will be held, Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025 at 11:00 AM at the First Christian Church, 316 W Main, Madison, KS. Visitation will take place at 10:00 AM, prior to the start of the service. Interment will follow at Blakely Cemetery.
