Edith Word Obituary

Published by Legacy on Nov. 19, 2025.
Edith Word, a lifelong resident of Durant, made her transition to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at the age of 88.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Thursday, November 20, 2025 at First Baptist Church of Durant, MS with Ed McDaniel, Lyn Nations, and David Cain officiating. Visitation at the church will be at 1:00 pm. There will be a private graveside service for family at a later time.

Edith had a passion for working and staying busy. She was the Head Teller at Merchants & Farmers Bank, later Renasant Bank, in Durant. Prior to that, she worked in the office at Durant Sportswear. Affectionately known to many of her bank customers as "Miss Edie," and to her closest friends as "Tiger," Edith's quick wit and candor will be sorely missed.

She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of Durant and served on the Insurance Committee and the Finance Committee.

She enjoyed church activities, Friday night dinner outings with Billy and Nancy Irby, and Ole Miss football.

Edith was the only child born to the late Boyd and Stella Farmer Moss of Durant.

Survivors include her children, Cindy Rucker of Yazoo City, Chris Rucker of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Steve "Duck" Rucker and his wife Lynne of Madison; grandchildren, Kyle (Megan) Rucker of Hernando and Kelly (Matthew) Pittman of Winona; and one great-grandchild, Harris Pittman of Winona; and step-daughter, DeeDee Word Bishop.

Special thanks to the entire staff at Lexington Manor for their outstanding care of Edith during her final days.
