Edna Mae (Freeman) Garbacz, a light of creativity and love, passed away peacefully at Good Shepherd Hospital on October 15, 2025, at the age of 87 in Barrington, Illinois surrounded by her loving family. Born on December 8, 1937, in Logan, West Virginia, Edna's life was a tapestry of vibrant colors and heartfelt connections that touched everyone she knew.
Edna's early years in Logan set the stage for a life filled with passion and dedication. She married the love of her life, George Garbacz, on April 22, 1969, and together they built a beautiful life in Lakemoor, Illinois. Their partnership was a testament to enduring love and mutual support until George's passing on January 5, 2021.
She is survived by a loving family who will forever cherish her memory: her children, Linda Petlak of Harvard, IL, Roger (Karen) Garbacz of
McHenry, IL, Bill Garbacz of Twin Lakes, WI, and Tracy Esposito of Crystal Lake, IL. Edna's legacy continues through her adoring grandchildren Kari (Brad) Cromeen, Candace Esposito, Josh (Tiffany) Bacon, Dustin (Nicole) Garbacz, Chris (Lauren) Esposito, Chris (Ally) Garbacz, Amy (Jeff) Heischberg, Cassandra (Barry) Esposito, Jessica (Eric) Ross, Jordan (Ann) Garbacz, Cody (Taylor) Garbacz, and Cory (Andie) Esposito as well as her twenty great-grandchildren who brought her immeasurable joy.
Preceded in death by her husband George, her parents Joseph and Polly, and her siblings, Edna's spirit remains a guiding light for her family.
Edna's life was characterized by her many careers, but she was notably recognized for her exceptional eye for design. Whether it was interior décor, fashion, or the serene beauty of her gardens, Edna's designs stood out for their unique style and elegance. Her creative touch brought beauty to the world and inspired those around her to embrace their own creativity.
An active member of her community, Edna's presence was felt in numerous ways. She was always ready to lend a helping hand or share her expertise, and her passion for life was contagious. Her ability to connect with people was one of her most remarkable traits, and she will be remembered for the warm and loving relationships she fostered throughout her life.
Above all, Edna's greatest joy was the family she created. She was a devoted wife, a loving sister, and a cherished friend, but it was in her role as a mother and grandmother that she found her true calling. Her love for her family was boundless, and she instilled in them values of kindness, creativity, and passion for life.
Edna Mae Garbacz will be remembered as a loving and creative soul, a passionate individual who lived life to the fullest. Her memory will be treasured in the hearts of those who knew her, and her influence will continue to be felt through the beauty she left behind. Her passing is not only a time to mourn but also a time to celebrate the extraordinary life of a woman who made the world a brighter place.
Her services will be held on Friday, October 17 with visitation from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm, and Mass to follow at 1:00 pm at The Church of Holy Apostles, 5211 Bull Valley Rd,
McHenry, IL. Burial will take place at 2:15 pm at Woodland Cemetery,
McHenry, IL. Edna's family and friends take comfort in knowing that her legacy lives on in the lessons she taught, the traditions she created, and the love she shared so generously.
