With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Eduardo A. Camilo, age 101, of North Dartmouth, who departed peacefully on Monday, December 15, 2025, at Tobey Hospital in Wareham after a brief illness.
Born in Brava, Cabo Verde to Andre J. Camilo and Matilde B. Camilo, Eduardo was a self-taught businessman whose entrepreneurial spirit and generosity touched countless lives. In 1951, he married Ilda G. Camilo, and together they opened a store in Nossa Senhora do Monte, creating jobs and helping others establish their own businesses. As community leaders and philanthropists, Eduardo and Ilda were pillars of Brava, dedicated to uplifting those around them.
In the early 1970s, Eduardo moved his family to California, seeking greater educational opportunities for his children. After the passing of his beloved wife Ilda in 1982, who was laid to rest in Brava, Eduardo relocated to the New Bedford area in 1984 and married Maria J. Gibau. Together, they built their home in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts.
Eduardo is survived by his wife: Maria G. Camilo; his children: Joao G. Camilo (Brava), Matilde G. Camilo (North Carolina), Helena G. Camilo (California), Eduardo A. Camilo, Jr. (California), Eugenia G. Camilo (California), Gladys G. Camilo (California), Cathy Chmiel (MA), and John Santiago (NH); and his sister: Anita C. Lomba (California). He was predeceased by siblings Eugenia A. Camilo and Jose Camilo, and by children Anita G. Camilo and Andre G. Camilo. Eduardo leaves behind a large and loving family of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and Godchildren.
He will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to the Cabo Verdean community, his kindness, and his enduring legacy of service and compassion.
His visitation will be held on Sunday, December 21st, from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. The funeral service will take place on Monday, December 22, at 11:00 am at funeral home, followed by burial at Sacred Heart Cemetery, 559 Mt. Pleasant St., New Bedford.
In lieu of flowers, consider making a donation to Caboverdeans United (caboverdeansunited.org) or to a charity of your choice, in honor of Eduardo A. Camilo's lifelong commitment to helping others.
