Edward Buss Obituary

Edward Buss
Born: April 17, 1929 in McHenry IL
Died: February 23, 2023 in McHenry IL
Edward John Buss passed away peacefully with his family at his bedside on February 23, 2023. Life for Ed began in McHenry where he resided his entire life. In his youth he excelled in academics and athletics. However, his biggest achievement was courting Joan Theresa May in high school, she eventually became his lifelong love. He married her in May 1950 where they went on to be members of St Mary's Church in McHenry the rest of their married life.
Ed's father died unexpectedly, which put him in a position to run Buss Ford at an early age. He became a successful businessman. Ed was a civic minded individual, he was on the McHenry County Board for 25 years. He was instrumental in the building of the Charles Miller Road and bridge. The McHenry Little League Association honored Ed by inducting him into their Hall of Fame after serving 12 years on the board and being a lifetime supporter.
Some of his fondest memories were spent at McHenry Country Club, where he won 13 club championships and 13 senior club championships. He boasts a best round of 62. He was on the country club board of directors for 12 years and served as president for four years. Ed found the game of golf a lot like the game of life, you run into unexpected obstacles, you struggle with things that seem simple, and if you work at it enough, you can achieve greatness.
In his retirement Ed enjoyed playing the stock market and wintering in their beautiful home in Surprise, AZ. Since Joan's passing in November 2022, Ed was heartbroken. After 72 years of marriage, one can only imagine the reunion these two will have in heaven.
Ed is survived by his 5 children, Judie (Leo) Dobner, Bonnie Bjorkman, Patricia (Sig) Schatz, Stephen (Diane) Buss and Robert (Ann) Buss. He had 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents Edward Buss Sr. and Ella (Newman) Buss, grandson Ryan and sister Betty and brother Bernie. Rest in peace Dad, you'll never be forgotten.
Edward's visitation will be Sunday, March 5, 2023 from 3-7pm at Justen Funeral Home in McHenry, IL and funeral Mass will be Monday, March 6, 2023 at 11am at St. Mary's Catholic Church in McHenry, IL. Interment will follow at St Mary's Catholic Cemetery in McHenry
In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to St. Mary's Catholic church or Fish Food Pantry (Gold Rush).

Around 9/11, I worked for Ed. I didn`t stay long, but the conversations we had stayed with me. He was a very balanced, fair man. He knew he could make friends, because he was a listener and showed respect to all. He was one of my favorite bosses/ owners of a bizz. His family has a lot to be proud of.

I have had the privilege to work for and with Ed for the last 12 years. He was a great man dedicated to his family, friends and employees. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. It was a pleasure knowing you Ed, I enjoyed all our conversations and the laughter you brought into my life. May your wings soar in heaven and your golf game be as good as it was in your hay day.

2013 is only my 10th year in Grand. I had the privilege to play golf with Eddie at least one day a week for 7 of those years. One day, after he had taken a few bucks from everyone in the group, I asked him: Eddie how old are you? He said something like "88." I said, "Eddie, I need to see your driver's license." He pulled this out of his pocket, and I took my favorite photo of him. I miss him greatly, but he lived a life any of us would envy.
