Edward Warren Cushman went to be with his Lord on January 16, 2026, at the age of 71. Ed was born in
Council, Idaho in 1954 to John Paul Cushman and Blanch D. Rogers. He spent most of his adult life in Spokane WA, and he will forever endure in the heart of his wife of 53 years, Cindy Cushman. Ed's spirit will be carried by so many, including his three sons and their wives: Jeremy and Summer, Scott and Michelle, Brad and Leesa; his grandchildren Gavin and Reegan; his siblings Anna, Paulette and Ken, John and Helen, Jay and Kathleen, Karen and Ruben; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Billie, and his brother-in-law, Fred.
Ed loved others. He was a devoted and passionate husband who believed love is an action. He was a principled and affectionate father who held and hugged his sons as much as he encouraged them to keep trying. He was a proud and playful grandfather ("Papa") who built Legos, dreamed about sports cars, cheered at impromptu living room gymnastics shows, and cuddled on the couch.
Ed's love infused his professional life. In 1973, at age 18, he went to work for McBride Motors. Shortly after he started his own auto repair shop, C&H Foreign Automotive Repair. Ed would often say that if you take care of people first, the business will take care of itself. It did. C&H received many awards for customer service, environmental practices, and business ethics. He retired in 2017 when his son, Scott, took up C&H's mission of serving its customers.
Apart from C&H, Ed served on multiple boards committed to improving the automotive repair industry, including the Automotive Services Association (ASA), where he served at both the local and state level. After retiring, Ed continued working as a coach, helping other shop owners better care for their customers.
Ed's love of others also showed up in his hobbies. He was an avid hunter and sporting clay shooter. His young sons remember heading out with him to the gun club on Saturdays where, of course, he volunteered to do everything from maintenance to fundraising. As his sons got older, Ed spent time with them on the shooting range sharing stories and reflections. Each year, he traveled to South Dakota to hunt with his dear friends. And even then, Ed always made sure to bring peanut brittle and Washington apples to farmers who welcomed them onto their land.
Ed, Dad, Papa, Friend, you will be forever missed, and now you can fly with the angels.
Service to be held at Hennessy Funeral Home on Saturday, January 31st at 11:30am (2203 N. Division,
Spokane, WA), followed by a reception at CenterPlace at 4pm (2426 N. Discovery Place, Spokane Valley, WA).
In honor of our dear Dad/Papa, you are invited to contribute to Cancer Care Northwest.
Please share your memories of Ed or condolences for the family on his tribute wall.
