Edward W. Devecka, Jr., known affectionately as Ed or Skip by his friends and family, passed away suddenly on November 6, 2024, in Broomall, PA. Born on April 25, 1941, in Bellevue, PA, and grew up in New Kensington, PA, Ed's journey through life was marked by his intelligence, kindness, and a wonderful sense of humor that endeared him to all who knew him.
Ed was a proud alumnus of Carnegie Mellon University, where he obtained his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, a field that would see him contribute significantly to the early space efforts of the United States. His technical expertise led him to RCA Aerospace Systems, where he played a vital role in calculating fuel requirements for rockets, an achievement that spoke to his meticulous nature and passion for precision. Furthering his education, Ed earned an MBA from the prestigious Harvard University Business School, which paved the way for a successful management career.
Professionally, Ed was a visionary leader. He began his management tenure at Jamesbury, a valve manufacturer, before utilizing his acute understanding of profit and loss at Arco Metals, eventually rising to the role of Vice President of Planning, Control, and Administration. In this capacity, he oversaw multiple plants with a strategic eye and a guiding hand. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to acquire LPB, Inc., transforming it into a global leader in the manufacturing and development of low-power broadcast systems, radio station studio components, and broadcast transmitters. His innovative approach and business acumen left an indelible mark on the industry.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Ed was a man of many interests. He had an insatiable love for reading, which kept him constantly engaged with the world of ideas and the unfolding narratives of human experience. Those who knew him remember a man who was as intelligent as he was kind, and whose humor could light up a room.
Ed's memory will be cherished and kept alive by his loving family. He is survived by his brother Joe and wife Patty, their son Martin and his wife Maya; his sister Kathy, her daughter Amanda, Amanda's spouse Smiley, and their daughter Nica Rose Eve; his son John and wife Carol and their daughters Rachael, Meghan, and Charlotte; and his daughter Wendy, her husband Jay, and their daughter Lindsay. Each of these individuals were touched by Ed's generosity, wisdom, and the joy he brought into their lives.
The loss of Edward W. Devecka, Jr. will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His life was a testament to the impact one individual can have through dedication to family, career, and the pursuit of knowledge. As we say goodbye to Ed, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of achievements, love, and laughter. His legacy will continue to inspire and influence the many lives he impacted.
