Edward Hatcher Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by U.C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home & Aqua Cremation Center on Jan. 22, 2026.
Edward Day Hatcher, age 89, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2026, in Morris. Born on March 11, 1936, Edward lived a life defined by dedication, service, and deep love for his family and friends.

In 1964, Edward married the love of his life, Valerie Hoffman, after a serendipitous meeting at a wedding. Their marriage was a true testament to enduring love and partnership, spanning 62 years.

Edward was a proud alumnus of Rose Polytechnic Institute, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. That same year, he began a distinguished 37-year career with the State of Illinois, serving as a highway engineer in Ottawa. Among his many contributions, his work on the Lincoln Memorial Bridge stands as a lasting symbol of his skill, precision, and commitment to public service. He retired after decades of dedication, leaving a legacy of progress in Illinois transportation.

Edward also proudly served his country as a Sargeant in the United States Army, completing six years of service and receiving an honorable discharge in 1965.

Since 1966, the Hatcher family home in Morris was a place filled with memories, laughter, and milestones. Edward found joy in building model cars and planes, hunting and fishing, and the quiet intricacies of cross-stitch. Edward was an avid reader and could often be found enjoying a western novel while sitting in his favorite rocking chair. He also loved the strategy and companionship of playing cribbage and chess, especially when played with his children and grandchildren.

Edward is survived by his beloved wife, Valerie Hatcher; his children, Paul (Hope) Hatcher, Leonard (Courtney) Hatcher, and Marjorie (Dr. Michael) Sanders; and his cherished grandchildren: Austin and Cameron Hatcher; Porter, Madison, and Mason Sanders; Wesley Guyer; and Lily and Leonora Hatcher. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched with his wisdom, kindness, and steady presence.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Betty Ann (Day) Hatcher, and his beloved daughter, Catherine Louise Hatcher.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by a celebration of Edward's life at 11:00 a.m. He will be laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery.
