Edward J. "Ed" McGovern, 76, of Philadelphia, PA, passed away suddenly on July 6, 2025, at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA. Born in Hempstead, NY, son of the late Edward J. Sr. and Anne McGovern (Gallagher). Ed was the beloved husband of Carol Ann, sharing 50 wonderful years of marriage. He was the loving father of Melanie (Jason), Katie (Patrick), and Joseph (Jaclyn). He will sadly be missed by his grandchildren: Grace, Avery, Liam, Emily, Ryan, and Olivia, his sister Anne Marie Helenski (Dave), many nieces, nephews, and in-laws, as well as extended friends and family. He was preceded in death by his sister, Aileen Elwonger. Ed proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He later retired from the Philadelphia Police Department after more than 25 years of service. He enjoyed life to the fullest. Ed loved baseball. He rarely missed watching a Phillies games and made a yearly trip to Cooperstown often for the Hall of Fame inductions. He was a member of multiple organizations - FOP Lodge #5, the Knights of Columbus, AOH Division 61 (where he played shuffleboard and softball) and most recently VFW Lodge. Most of all, Ed loved spending time with his family whether it be their trips to the shore, mountains, Knoebels, or just meeting up for dinner. Ed always had a smile on his face and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate his life on Tuesday, July 22nd, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the John F. Givnish Life Celebration Home, 10975 Academy Road, Philadelphia, PA 19154. A memorial service will follow at 12:00 PM, with entombment at 2:30 PM at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, 830 Highland Road, Newtown, PA 18940. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ed's name to the Police Survivors Fund at FOP Lodge #5. Sending heartfelt condolences to the McGovern family. Worked with Ed in the 26th District. Shared a lot of laughs and great memories. Ed was a solid guy who was a great coworker and a great teammate. He will be kept in my prayers.

I worked with Ed in the 16th District back in 1974. He was one of the nicest guys I ever met. He had a great personality and was always laughing. I´m glad I had a chance to know him. Rest in peace my friend
