Edward Murphy Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Costello Funeral Home on Jan. 21, 2026.
Edward P. Murphy, age 76, passed away at his home on December 11, 2025. Born on June 23, 1949, he was the son of the late Carrol Edward and Helen C. (Peterson) Murphy. Ed worked as a firefighter for the Winchester Fire Department for 33 years before retiring June 26th, 2004.
Edward is survived by his sister-in-law Gail, nephews Peter and Neil Murphy and his beloved Bulldog Sammy. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Peter.
Around the fire department he was known as the "Guru" or simply "Murph". He was a wealth of knowledge, never at a loss for words and would put his unique way of thinking into any conversation, from firehouse politics to sports. At the firehouse, Ed would hold court at the old watch desk with anyone who braved his presence and he would share stories old and new... friends and co-workers couldn't wait to hear what he had to say next, which was always something entertaining, thoughtful and meaningful. Ed had a heart of gold and considerately remembered the smallest details of his co-workers and their families. He never missed a chance to send flowers for a wake or funeral, especially for a brother firefighter or member of their family.
Ed was a proud member of the United States Marine Corps where he served as a reservist. He continued his support for the U.S. Military by making regular contributions to veteran's organizations and supporting local veteran's groups. He was also a lifelong admirer of Bulldogs and always had one by his side. He was a passionate motorcycle enthusiast, mostly of older models of Harley Davidsons, Triumph and Moto Guzi. On more than one occasion, he was fortunate enough to travel across the United States on a motorcycle and loved to share stories from those road trips. He will be remembered as a true adventurer, living life the way he wanted.
A Graveside Service held will be held on Monday, March 2nd, at 1PM at the Calvary Cemetery, 686 Washington St., Winchester, MA. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
