Edward Nussel Obituary

Edward J. Nussel

Edward J. Nussel, a dedicated husband, father, educator, and tennis enthusiast, passed away on January 24, 2025, in Sylvania, Ohio, after a long illness. He was 92.

Nussel was married to his beloved spouse, the late Lorraine R. (Varana) Nussel, for more than 67 years. They had three sons, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

A lifetime academic, Nussel taught generations of students, from elementary school children in Detroit to graduate students at the University of Toledo, where he was a professor of education. He retired from UT in 1987, but remained on campus for several additional years as a professor emeritus.

Nussel played tennis for decades in Toledo until he retired from competition at age 85. He also promoted and administered the sport as a volunteer for the United States Tennis Association, where he served as president of the Northwest Ohio and Midwest affiliates.

Nussel was born in Detroit on April 14, 1932, the son of Edward Nussel and Emily (Pearman) Nussel. He graduated from St. Cecilia High School in 1949. He holds a bachelor's degree in education and history from the University of Detroit. He also earned a master's degree and doctorate in education from Wayne State University.

In one of his many side pursuits, Nussel, for many years, wrote opinion letters to The Toledo Blade, saying he "took great pleasure discussing issues in a public forum."

Nussel was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine; and his sisters, Emily Blankenship and Marjorie Dinco. He is survived by his sons, Jay Edward (Jill) of Linden, Michigan; Gregory Alan (Vanessa) of San Antonio, Texas; and Philip Gerard of Saline, Michigan; grandchildren, Steven of Toledo; Laura West (Brady) of Dexter, Michigan; and Andrew of Kalamazoo, Michigan; and two great-grandchildren, Carter and Everleigh West.

In lieu of flowers, the Nussel family asks that donations be made in Edward Nussel's name to St. Pius X Catholic Church, 2950 Ilger Ave., Toledo, Ohio 43606.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave., Toledo, where a visitation will be held 3-7 p.m., on Wednesday, February 5. A funeral Mass is set for 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 6, at St. Pius X Church, with interment following at Resurrection Cemetery, 5725 Hill Ave, Toledo.

My condolences on the passing of your father. We lived across the street from you on Cheltenham, my twin brother, Joel Frank and I played with Philip. Your mom and dad bought my girl scout cookies and we went to church at St Pius. May your family find peace in the Lord's arms during your grieving.

To the Nussel brothers -- I know how hard you worked to help your Dad in his last years. My Dad so enjoyed talking to your Dad about the affairs of the day -- particularly politics -- and was sad when those conversations stopped. May his memory be a blessing to you.

My condolences, thoughts and prayers to the Nussel family. They are some of the nicest people I´ve ever met. I remember Jay and all of our other grade school St. Pius buddies (Bires, Szymanski, Krohbacker (?), Aust, Peer) playing together and Mr and Mrs Nussel were always so nice and pleasant to us. Rest in Peace Mr Nussel.
