Edward Henry Smilde, age 88, from Laguna Niguel, CA, was welcomed in heaven on Thursday, October 9, 2025. He is now reunited with his wife, Grace Smilde and son, Mark Smilde. Born to John and Anne Smilde in Bussum, Holland on March 15, 1937. Edward was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, mentor and teacher to all. He was a proud alumnus of Calvin University and a secondary teacher for many years in California at Whitney High School and Valley Christian High School.
He loved to read, travel, and found the utmost joy in studying history and seeing his children thrive. He was a lifelong learner and continued to read and watch the news until his last day. He leaves behind many cherished dear friends in California, Michigan, Illinois and beyond. He was loved and will be dearly missed. He will always be remembered for his motto "expect nothing, blame no one, and do something."
He is survived by his daughter, Susan and Paul Holwerda; daughter, Heidi Smilde and Steve Jones; daughter, Heather Smilde and Vincent Sayegh; son, John and Julia Smilde; son, David and Maria Smilde; grandchildren, Steven, Laura, Michelle, Brian, Edward, Maria, Bridget, Yara, Annaleise, Henrik, Holland, Andrew, Grace, Scarlett, and Amelia; nieces, nephews, extended family; and friends.
He will be laid to rest at Lexington Cemetery with a family graveside service at 11 am on Saturday, October 18, 2025, and a celebration of life will follow in November in California date TBD.
