Edward Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McFarland Funeral Home, Inc. - Owensboro on Nov. 25, 2025.

Publish in a newspaper

Edward "Al" Smith, 86, of Owensboro, Kentucky, peacefully transitioned from this life on November 24, 2025. He was born on November 4th 1939 to the late Wille Smith Sr. and Ammie Smith of Andrews, SC.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, his wife Creasie Talbott-Smith, and five siblings.

A devoted father, brother, grandfather, and faithful servant of God, Al lived a life marked by humility, compassion, and unwavering commitment to his family, church, and community.

Al grew up with strong values rooted in love, hard work, and faith-principles he carried with him throughout his life. He was a proud and active member of Zion Baptist Church in Owensboro, KY, where he served faithfully as a Deacon, a dedicated member of the Usher Board, and a powerful voice in the Owensboro Men's Mass Community Choir. His service in the church was not just a responsibility but a calling, and he touched countless lives through his guidance, prayers, and kindness.

Al's legacy continues through his children, Pam Ali of Owensboro, KY, and Dirk Smith of Jacksonville, FL. He is also survived by his loving sisters: Merdis Jones (Owensboro, KY), Gracie McCutchen (Andrews, SC), Emma Drayton (Georgetown, SC), and Willie-Faye Gates (Charleston, SC), each of whom he cherished deeply.

He was blessed with a beautiful and growing family: his grandchildren Alisha Smith (Owensboro, KY), Tyler Smith and wife Stephenie Smith (Anchorage, AK), Antoinette Smith (Memphis, TN), and Creasie Kelly (Jacksonville, FL); as well as eight great-grandchildren, who brought him tremendous joy.

Al also opened his heart to those he considered his special sons: Kent Kelly (Anchorage, AK) and Lionel Carbon (Owensboro, KY). To him, family was defined not only by blood but by love, loyalty, and shared life.

Known for his warm smile, gentle spirit, and willingness to help anyone in need, Al was a pillar in both the church and the community. Whether he was singing, serving, or offering quiet encouragement, he made those around him feel supported and valued.

Edward "Al" Smith's life was a testament to faith, endurance, and love. He leaves behind a legacy that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His family takes comfort in knowing he has been welcomed into eternal rest, reunited with those who went before him, and embraced by the Savior he served so faithfully.

He will be deeply missed-but forever remembered.

A Service to Celebrate the Life of Al Smith will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at Zion Baptist Church, 2311 W. 9th Street, Owensboro, KY 42301. Rev. Larry D. Lewis, Pastor, will preside.

Visitation will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 1, 2025, at McFarland Funeral Home, 1001 W. 5th Street, Owensboro, KY 42301.

Following the service, Burial and Committal will be at Rosehill Elmwood Cemetery, 1300 Old Hartford Road, Owensboro, KY 42301.
