Edward Sprik Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Young-Holdship Funeral Home on Nov. 30, 2024.
Edward "Reg" Sprik, of Bellaire, passed away peacefully Thursday, November 28, 2024.
Born to Ed and Margaret (Aten) Sprik in Detroit on December 28, 1927, Reg was the youngest of four boys. He was a graduate of Manton High School, where he excelled both academically and athletically. He then attended Western Michigan University, where he met and married Marilyn Carlson on August 24, 1951. After graduating Western Michigan University with a Bachelor's Degree and teacher certification, Reg received his Master's Degree from Central Michigan University.
Reg went on to teach elementary, middle and high school for more than 20 years and remained passionate about education throughout his life.
He and Marilyn had four children and some of his most enjoyable times took place during the nine years he, Marilyn and the children lived on their 41 acre farm with horses and assorted farm animals. Reg and Marilyn were married for 56 years.
Reg, a WWII veteran, was a lover of music who played several instruments. He had his own band, recorded several albums, and participated in community bands. He also loved swing dancing and big band music.
Later in life, Reg became an avid runner; running road races well into his 70s. Reg was a voracious reader, baseball history aficionado, crossword puzzler, conservationist and international traveller. When he was in his 90s, he became a published author and travelled around northern Michigan doing book signings.
Reg is survived by his children, David (Cheryl) Sprik of Ft. Myers, FL., Bob Sprik of Lowell, Jan (Bill) Bock of Bellaire and Nancy (Jim) VandenBroek of Bellaire. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren; Rob Bock, Jason Sprik, Danielle Sprik, Andy Bock, Tiffany Aldrich, Derek Sprik, Gina Sprik, Shena Miller, Kyle Aldrich, Brittany Peterson, several great-grandchildren and many other family and beloved friends.
He was predeceased by his wife, parents, three brothers, Harold, Don and Ray Sprik, daughter in law Robin Sprik, two grandchildren, Brian and Lisa Bock, and one great-grandchild, Luke Schaedig.
Reg's final resting place is in the Arlene (Caldwell Township) Cemetery.
No services are planned, but a Celebration of Reg's Life will be announced at a later date.

My husband Dale LaBelle met Reg through their shared love of music. They played quite a few shows together in the Northern Michigan area. I also joined them sometimes. Dale played guitar and I played keyboard. These are fond memories, of which my favorite was when Reg played a Christmas concert with the community band. Sadly, Dale also passed this year in June.
I found Reg in my contacts and decided to look him up.

My condolences to the many family members and friends. We were able to meet his daughters, who had a wonderful relationship with him. He was sure proud of his family!
Blessings, Dale and Marina LaBelle

First, my condolences to all of Reg's family. I only met Reg during a vacation, but we kept in touch and formed a real bond through many phone conversations and some written communication, where we shared things about our lives. We were a generation apart, and I appreciated his stories about the times before my time, which he expressed in his great memoir. Rest in peace, my dear oldest friend. You may be gone, but I'll never forget you!

I have many great memories of Reg. He was a true gentleman.

My sincere condolences to the family. Reg is with his Marilyn again.

Jim passed in June, so perhaps they are sharing running stories again.

Love, Linda Elzinga.
