Edward Ballou Staudinger, MD
February 11, 1954 – July 8, 2025
Dr. Edward Ballou Staudinger passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 8, 2025, at the age of 71. Born on February 11, 1954, in Providence, Rhode Island, Ed dedicated his life to taking care of others - both in and out of the operating room.
A graduate of Trinity College in Hartford, CT, Ed went on to earn his medical degree from Tufts University before moving to New Orleans to complete his surgical residency at Tulane University.
While training at Charity Hospital, he fell in love with his wife, Mary, and New Orleans, where he would remain and build a distinguished career as a general surgeon. Known for his technical excellence, austere demeanor, and unwavering commitment to his work, Ed saved countless lives and touched many more for over 30 years in practice. He worked as a general surgeon at Baptist Hospital for over three decades where he was named Chief of Surgery in 1999 and Chief of Staff in 2003.
Ed was a generous man with a sharp mind and steady hand. From an early age, golf and the relationships it built helped steady and motivate him. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of the USGA Rules of Golf and would be proud to say he played until the weekend before he passed. He also excelled at fine woodcraft, loved cheering on the Red Sox, cursing the Saints, and spending time with his family. Of all his many accomplishments, he was most proud of his children and grandchildren. They were his deepest source of pride, and their happiness and well-being meant more to him than anything else.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Moore Staudinger; his children Cara Basirico Staudinger Ogg (Thomas), Robin Staudinger Williamson (Matthew), Katherine Jane Staudinger, and Christopher Edward Staudinger (David O'Byrne); his siblings Kathleen Staudinger (Joseph Campbell), Jane Wallbridge (Edward), Evelyn Staudinger, Kevin Staudinger (Maura Kennedy), and David Staudinger (Holly); and his cherished grandchildren Quinn Julia Ogg, Thompson Alonzo Ogg, Mclain Carpenter Ogg, Carter Edward Williamson, and Cecilia Evans Williamson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Leonard Singleton Staudinger
Ed's friends and family will gather for a private service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ed's memory to Hemochromatosis.org.
