Eastford – Ed Windecker, Sr., 90, died in the comfort of his home on August 2, 2024. Ed was born in Fort Lee, New Jersey to Frederick and Katherine (Ray) Windecker. He was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Janet. They successfully raised four children, Ed Jr. (Wendy), Diane (Greg), Kathryn (Nick) and John. Ed, or "Papa" adored his eight (8) grandchildren and twelve (12) great grandchildren. He always had a story or tall tale to tell the children. But his story telling was not reserved for only the children, anyone who spent time with Ed became aware of his gift for gab. It is no wonder that he succeeded in a career in sales. Ed worked his way up in the construction industry. He spent many years successfully managing sales teams at Gardner-Denver and Boart.
Ed loved to hunt and fish. In fact, he found his home in Eastford while hunting the Natchaug State Forest, which abuts his property. Ed's lifelong passion for hunting and fishing produced some of his finest stories. The adventures started in the mid-sixties in northern New Jersey, then the Catskills in New York for many years. Finally, many great experiences in the Nachaug Forest with his son Ed, Jr. and more recently including another generation, E.J., his grandson. Ed beamed with joy when his crew of cold, hungry hunters sat around his Eastford home sharing stories and a celebratory bourbon or three.
Ed also loved a good meal, from the excellent home cooking of Janet to many favorite restaurants over the years. The meal was even better if it included part of his ever-growing family.
Friends and family are invited to services at Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church Street, Putnam, CT. Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2024, from 1pm – 2pm, with a service in the funeral home at 2pm. Burial will follow at Eastford Grove Cemetery.
