Edward Winkle, Jr.
Edwardsville - Edward Winkle, Jr., age 101, of Edwardsville, IL, passed away on Friday, October 3, 2025, at Manor Court in Maryville, IL. Ed was born on July 5, 1924, in Checotah, OK, the son of the late Ethel (Smith) & Edward Winkle, Sr.. He married Betty (Somerlad) Winkle May 20, 1946, in Edwardsville. Betty preceded Ed in death on December 29, 2007. Ed is survived by a daughter, Deborah Corkery, of Edwardsville; a son, Dennis Winkle, of Edwardsville; five grandchildren: Brendan Corkery, of St. Charles, MO, Casey Corkery, of Edwardsville, Colleen Corkery, of Edwardsville, Melissa Winkle, Kimberly Ehret & her husband Jake, of Edwardsville; and two great grandchildren, Finn Corkery and Jamyson Ehret. Besides his parents and wife, Ed was preceded in death by a son, Gary Winkle; grandson, Neil Corkery; daughter in law, Connie Winkle; son-in-law, Patrick Corkery; and his four siblings, Lois Lee, Lorraine Lamkin, Everett Winkle, and Emmett Winkle. Ed worked for many years as a machinist at Union Tank Car Company. In his later years Ed eventually moved over to the Edwardsville School District to work in maintenance. Ed was a veteran of the US Navy, serving in the Pacific during World War II. He was an early member of the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Little League and the Parks & Recreation Board where he was instrumental in the building of Hoppe Park. He was a passionate Cardinals baseball fan along with Illini football and basketball. Ed was also an avid outdoorsman enjoying camping, hunting and fishing. He also loved woodworking. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Valley View Cemetery in Edwardsville.
The family suggests memorials may be made to Metro East Humane Society or Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Little League (EGCLL). Condolences may be shared online at weberfuneralhome.com.
