Edward Zappen Obituary

Edward Zappen Jr., age 83, of Wisconsin Rapids, passed away on November 19 surrounded by his loving family. Born on November 9, 1942, in Oklahoma City, Edward lived a life defined by service, a passion for justice, and devotion to family.

Following in his father's footsteps, Ed pursued a career in law and military service. He graduated from Marquette University in 1966 with an undergraduate degree in psychology and philosophy. Ed then served as a Missile Combat Crew Commander in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1970. He continued his service in the Air Force Reserves until 1989, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Ed earned his Juris Doctor from Marquette University Law School in 1973, mirroring his father's educational path. In 1975, he became Wood County's first full-time District Attorney. His commitment to justice led him to the bench in 1979 when he was appointed Wood County Circuit Court Judge, a position he held with distinction until his retirement in 2009.

Beyond his professional achievements, Ed was a man of many talents and interests. He was an accomplished woodworker, most notably recreating the portable desk Thomas Jefferson used while writing the Declaration of Independence. This meticulous recreation earned a place in a Smithsonian traveling exhibit, showcasing Ed's skill and his deep appreciation for American history. Ed's passion resulted in him also becoming an author along the way with the forthcoming publication of his book, Jefferson's Declaration Desk, by Lost Art Press. The book will include historical context as well as detailed instructions-one of the first, if not the first, manuals for building a faithful replica of Thomas Jefferson's writing desk for the Declaration of Independence.

Edward's love for his family was the cornerstone of his life. He is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Kathleen Lee-Zappen; his first wife, Mary Sullivan, and their children, Rebecca (Darren) and Eddie (Carrie); his stepsons, Bob (Rita), Dave (Anna), and Jon (Cara) Lee; and a bonus son, Howard. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Lauren (Luis), Mae, Emma, Tristan, Stella, Vivian, Katie (Corrina), Elizabeth, Jimmy, David, and Morgan. Two sisters Jeanne (Rick) and Peg (Pat) and his brother Jim (Susan) also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Margaret and a sister Rita.

A note of deep gratitude goes to Kris Somers for her unending care and support of Ed and the family throughout his illness. Kris and Ed shared a uniquely strong bond, and he was always happy in her care. The family also extends heartfelt thanks to Ed's Heartland Hospice Support Team led by RN Michelle, for their compassionate support, care, and kindness.

Those who knew Ed will remember him for his quick wit, his love of woodworking, sailing and guitar, his voracious appetite for reading, and most of all his enormous love and pride for his family, especially his beloved grandchildren who brought so much joy and excitement to his life. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Wisconsin Rapids on Friday, January 30, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be held at the church from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Private burial will be held at a later date at Hillside Cemetery in Marshfield.
