Edwin G. McDonald, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a lifetime marked by service, integrity, and unwavering love for his family. Born in Winchester, Kentucky, on February 15, 1931, Edwin was the son of William and Ida Golden McDonald. He grew up alongside one brother and two sisters, all of whom preceded him in death, and whose memories he carried lovingly throughout his life.
Edwin pursued his education at Fugazzi Business College, laying the foundation for a career defined by dedication and quiet excellence. As a young man, he served honorably in Germany during the Cold War, answering his country's call with humility and courage.
Following his military service, Edwin built a long and respected career with the Fayette County Board of Education. There, he worked for several years in computer programming, helping the school system evolve through changing times and technologies. His colleagues knew him as steadfast, thoughtful, and deeply committed to his work. He retired in 1993 at the age of 62, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism and service.
Edwin also believed deeply in civic responsibility. He volunteered as a poll worker during every election, offering his time and care to help ensure that his community's voice was heard. His participation was more than a duty-it reflected his belief in fairness, democracy, and the importance of being involved.
Yet, above all his accomplishments, Edwin's heart belonged to his family. He shared 67 years of steadfast love with his wife, Polly McDonald, his lifelong companion and closest friend. Together, they built a home filled with warmth, stability, and grace.
He is survived by his cherished wife Polly; his two children, Alan McDonald and Tracey (Ken) Salyer; and three grandchildren-Nathan Salyer, Adam (Courtney) Salyer, and Laura (Boris) Basnuevo-each of whom held a special place in his heart. Edwin was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren: Sadie and William Salyer; Landon and Mason Salyer; Kratos, Annora, and Lukas Basnuevo, all of whom brought him immeasurable joy and light in his later years.
Edwin's life was a testament to kindness, commitment, and humility. Always an engaging storyteller, connoisseur of good westerns, and a lover of music, his gifts and affections passed on to many of those around him.
His family will forever carry his example with them and honor the legacy of love he leaves behind. Though he will be deeply missed, his spirit will continue to shine through the generations he nurtured and inspired.
May he rest in peace.
