Edwin Dwayne Phillips, age 45, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, passed away on March 16, 2026. He was born on August 26, 1980, in Nashville, Tennessee.
Edwin was the kind of person who never met a stranger. He genuinely loved conversation and connection, always ready to share a laugh, a story, or a well-timed joke to keep things light. He had a natural wit and a playful spirit, often looking for ways to bring humor into everyday moments and make others feel at ease.
He had a passion for cooking and grilling, often experimenting with new recipes and drawing inspiration from different cultures. He enjoyed dreaming up dishes of his own and especially loved encouraging his children to try new things alongside him. His home was a place of comfort and openness, a space he intentionally created where anyone felt welcome. To many, he was more than a father, he became a second dad to his children’s friends and a steady presence in the lives of those around him .
Edwin enjoyed sports, especially football, and kept up with fantasy leagues. Hockey was a special connection between him and his son Eric, creating shared moments they both cherished. He also loved music and played guitar, something he proudly passed on by introducing Eric to it at a young age. Whether it was gaming together, teaching card tricks, or simply spending time side by side, Edwin believed in learning through doing and creating meaningful experiences with his children .
He had a creative side and took pride in his tattoos, some of which held shared meaning with his son. Above all, he valued time, connection, and the relationships he built throughout his life.
Edwin is survived by his children, Eric Phillips and Elena Phillips; his former spouse, Erin Phillips; his siblings, Chad, Brad, Rebecca, and Carter Poole; and his close in-laws, Richard and Jan Woodard, with whom he shared a special bond. He is also remembered by many extended family members and friends who will carry his memory forward.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Phillips; his mother, Robbie Phillips (West); and his sister, Jaime.
Edwin will be remembered for his humor, his heart, and the way he made people feel seen, welcome, and valued. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
