Edwin Eugene "Gene" Word

Edwin Eugene “Gene” Word, 84, went to be with the Lord on June 6, 2025.  He was born on May 23, 1941 in Bauxite, Arkansas.  

Gene is survived by his wife of 35 years, Darla Word; daughter, Stacey Green (Darrell) of Hot Springs, Arkansas; son, Randy “Bubba” Runnells of Little Rock, and granddaughters:  Sarah Augusti (Luca) of Rogers, Arkansas, Hannah Runnells of Rogers, Arkansas, Kaitlyn Runnells of North Little Rock, Arkansas, Madison Runnells of Olive Branch, Mississippi, Morgan Runnells of Olive Branch, Mississippi, along with many cherished nieces, nephews, family members and friends who love Gene and will miss him always.  

Gene is preceded in death by his father, Raymond Word; mother, Bernice Word; sister, Mary Alice Woodall; brothers: T.L. Word (Margie) and W.A. Word; and nephew, Bobby Word.  

Gene retired from ALCOA after 31 years.  He was in the housing rental business for many years and was a successful entrepreneur in Saline county. Gene loved Corvettes, exotic cowboy boots, taking snow skiing trips, watching NASCAR races, and hosting epic parties.  Gene was a wonderful husband, father, and Paw Paw.  We will miss him forever and cherish every memory.  His faith in God kept him going through his long illness. 

Many heartfelt thanks to Saline Memorial and Megan Spriggs with Gentiva Hospice.  The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. Mark Martindale for the compassionate and outstanding care he provided to Gene during the last several years.  

A celebration of life will be held later this summer.  In lieu of flowers, express your love to those around you and if you choose, you may donate to St. Jude’s’s Hospital and. Memphis, Tennessee.
