Egon Sommer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel & Monuments - Gothenburg on Jan. 27, 2026.
Egon H. Sommer, 88, passed away on January 04, 2026 at Nursing Home Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg, NE, three days before his 89 birthday.

Egon Hans Bruno Sommer was born January 7, 1937 in Berlin, Germany.

He often recalled his experiences as a small child during the war which shaped his character toward frugality and hard work. He earned high marks in school and studied numerous languages.

Egon had intentions to study biology and ornithology until the misfortunate illness of his mother. At that time, it was decided that he was to quickly shift his studies to a trade so that he could support himself.

At age 17, following the untimely passing of his mother, Egon chose to immigrate to the United States of America through the port of New York City. He was sponsored by the Brewer family of Hays, Kansas, who took on the role of foster parents due to his young age.

Days later, he enlisted into the US Army, serving a two-year term and then three additional years as a reserve. Some of his military assignments carried him back to Germany, where he was frequently called upon to interpret.

He married Ursula Olberg in 1963. They lived in Illinois and then Colorado, where Egon proudly served in his career with Trans World Airlines at Stapleton Airport. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing in the mountains of Colorado. Both Egon and Ursula instilled a love of nature and the outdoors within their children. Upon his retirement Egon and Ursula purchased a home and small property in Dickens, Nebraska, where they tended a large and productive garden as well as numerous farm animals.

Egon is preceded in death by both his parents and by his wife, Ursula.

He is survived by his brother, Manfred Sommer (wife Anne) of Berlin Germany, his adult children, William Sommer (wife April) of Castlerock, Colorado; Martin Sommer (wife Christine) of Paris, Arkansas; Carolyn Sommer of McCook, Nebraska; Susan Schulze (husband Jerrid) of Thornton, Colorado,

18- grandchildren, and 14- great-grandchildren. He is also survived by Mac Brewer of Arizona, whom he considered his foster brother, and many others in the extended Brewer family. Egon witnessed a great deal of historical change during the span his lifetime. His presence will be missed by his family, friends, and neighbors.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
