George Dillon Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel & Monuments - Gothenburg on Mar. 8, 2026.
George M. Dillon, 84, of Gothenburg, Neb., passed away on March 7, 2026, at his home in Gothenburg surrounded by his family.

George was born on June 10, 1941, in Cozad, Neb., to Morris "Tag" and Lucille "Sugar" A. (McVicker) Dillon. He grew up south of Cozad on the Dillon family farm. He attended Cozad High School, graduating with the Class of 1960. George was a gifted high school athlete competing in football, wrestling and track. He later graduated from Kearney State College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1971.

On February 23, 1963, George married Margaret Lyons at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Gothenburg, Neb. To this 63-year union, five daughters were born. Perhaps one of George's biggest accomplishments was raising five daughters in a house with only one bathroom! George was often asked if he thought he would ever have a son. He always replied, "I don't care. I love all my girls!"

George worked in the agronomy field for many years. He then worked as an over-the-road fuel driver for numerous years. In later years, George took vacation time to help his son-in-law David haul corn during harvest. During his retirement, George enjoyed what he considered his dream job, mowing and helping with upkeep at Wild Horse Golf Course.

George was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Cozad and Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Gothenburg, where he served as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. He was also very proud to be a member of the Knights of Columbus.

In his free time, George enjoyed fishing, and often entertained his family and friends with many (tall) fishing tales. George never knew a stranger and enjoyed striking up a conversation with anyone and everyone. He was a huge fan of Husker athletics and if they were on tv, he was watching them. George thought he died and went to heaven when he had the opportunity to enjoy a Nebraska football game from a Memorial Stadium skybox. Most of all, George enjoyed spending time with his family. His grandchildren loved going on bike rides with grandpa, and he loved following his children, and later his grandchildren, to their many activities.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Morris "Tag" Dillon and Lucille "Sugar" Dillon, brothers, Bob Dillon and Don Dillon, sister Donna Kolbo Christianson, his in-laws, Joe and Verda Lyons, and great-grandson, Sam Ruskamp.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Dillon; his daughters, Teresa (David) Hasenkamp of Beemer, Neb., Natalie (Alan) Guenther of West Point, Neb., Cathy (Jim) Walker of Eustis, Neb., Karen (Daniel) Bracht of West Point, Neb., and Megan (Mike) Dutt of Yutan, Neb; 10 granddaughters, two grandsons and six great-grandsons, with another great-grandchild on the way, brothers, Jack (Judy) Dillon of Lincoln, Neb. and Jim (Robee) Dillon of Cozad,Neb., sister-in-law, Cap Dillon of Cozad, Neb., along with many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Memorial mass will be held Thursday, March 12, 2026 at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Gothenburg, with Father Joseph Ravi officiating. To honor George's memory, the family suggests family and friends wear Husker attire to the service.

Private family burial will be held at Peckham Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers and plants, memorials may be made to the Gothenburg Public Library, Gothenburg Volunteer Fire Department, or Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church.
