Eileen M. Hoffman of Barker, NY, wife of James C. Hoffman, entered into rest August 8,
2025 under hospice care in Lockport, NY. She was born May 1, 1929, daughter of
George A. Miller and Dora E. Grogger Miller.
Mother of David (Jennifer) Hoffman, Daniel (Angelique) Hoffman, Julie (Ronald) Slaby,
and Thomas Hoffman. Grandmother of Natalie and Elena Hoffman, Lilyana, Hope, and
Genevieve Hoffman, and Estelle Slaby. Sister of the late Max Grogger Miller and the
late Dean George Miller. Aunt of Susan, Lee, and the late Stephen Miller.
Eileen graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Education degree
and later obtained a Master of Science degree from SUNY Albany. She taught
mathematics for ten years at Shaker High in Albany, NY and was a member of the
Board of Directors of the Saratoga YMCA. She travelled extensively in her early years
through Europe, Africa, and India and told of the many adventures she had in those
places. Eileen also represented the United States in one of the early World Assembly of
Youth Conclaves held in Ghana. An adventurer even at home, she camped her way
across the United States with friends, earning her keep as she went.
Eileen retired from teaching to become a stay-at-home mother and eventually settled
with her husband James in Barker, NY, Town of Somerset. She enjoyed painting and
cooking and card making. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in
Barker where she sang in the choir, was an active member of the women's group, and
taught and directed Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and the Adult Class. She
was also a delegate to the Annual Conference. Eileen spent a number of years on the
Barker Central School Board and served as Board President.
A memorial service will be held August 23 at 11am at Faith United Methodist Church,
