Elbert McKindley Weeks, better known as "Ray Jay", passed away peacefully
from this life on April 10, 2025, at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital surrounded by
his family. Ray Jay gave his life to Christ at an early age, but on April 4, 2025, at
2:55 a.m., he urgently told his wife he wanted to rededicate his life back to Christ,
and did just that.
He was born to the late Bernard Weeks, Sr., and Elizabeth Custis Weeks. He was
preceded in death by his brother, Bernard Weeks, Jr.; sister, Tyquina Thomas; and
granddaughter, Kiera Allen.
"Ray Jay" married his love, Charlotte Weeks, on January 1, 1988. Charlotte and her
"Pookalocka", as she affectionately called him, have six children: Elbert Weeks of
Virginia Beach, Virginia, Keisha Boldin (Quinton) of Birdsnest, Virginia, Alisha
Weeks (Jermel) of Suffolk, Virginia, Lakesha Allen (Eric) of Miami, Florida, Joe
Packer (Debbie) of Toano, Virginia, and Shannon Godwin of Raleigh, North Carolina.
"Ray Jay" was educated at Northampton public schools.
He worked various jobs throughout his career but retired from Perdue Farms in
2016 as a maintenance professional after 33 years of dedicated service.
"Ray Jay" enjoyed several hobbies, including working on cars. He was so talented
he even once built a six-wheeler van. He also loved maintaining his lawn, crabbing,
fishing, go-cart racing, and watching How It's Made. "Ray Jay" enjoyed a good
challenge. He even built his own three-wheel electric bike. Football season was his
favorite, as he had two teams he rooted for, the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh
Steelers. Out of everything, his favorite pastime was spending time with his wife,
children, and close friends. You could often find him sitting in his favorite chair,
singing his favorite songs, "Standing on the Banks of Jordan" and "I Can Only
Imagine".
In addition, he leaves behind to cherish his memory: step mother, Lucille Weeks, sister, Sedonia Williams
(Roscoe) of Eastville, VA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dr. Lewis Church (Dr. Lila
Teresa Church) of Durham, NC, Florence Church of Charlottesville, VA, Pauline
Bailey (Jeremiah) of Birdsnest, VA, Ellen Joyner (Diwight) of Birdsnest, VA,
Otha Church (Shirley) of Severn, MD and Howard Thomas of Eastville, VA; 17
grandchildren, Tiffany, Imani, Reginald, Samiaya, Alecia, Kayla, Jaida, Jada, Mason,
Janelle, Joe, Joe Jr., Micheal, Cameron, Tyler, Corey, and Quincy; goddaughter,
Shamara Bondick; two great-godchildren; one great-grandchild; and man's best
friend, his dog, "Partner".
He had a host of friends but he had six that were especially dear: Roland "Butch"
Bailey, Alvin Rogers, Reggie Williams, Elton Wyatt, Elizabeth Smith, and James
Townsend.
A heart of gold stopped beating
Hard working hands now rest
This has been one of life's challenges
But they do say, God only takes the best
We sat with you by your bedside
Our hearts became crushed and sore
We saw our duty through to the end
Until we could do no more
A life of kindness and laughter
Your love for all the family so true
You did your best for all of us
And we will always remember you
You leave behind a legacy
So great, it's beyond measure
Our hearts full of beautiful memories
So precious that we will treasure
You have been life's greatest blessing
A good friend to all that you knew
We take great comfort in knowing that
We are proud to have been a part of you
Until the time comes we meet again
Who knows how long we have to wait
On behalf of your friends and family,
we say
God bless you Dad,
We love you Mate
