Obituary published on Legacy.com by Holloway Funeral Home - Salisbury on Dec. 26, 2025.
Barbara Palmer Koontz, 79, of Fruitland, Maryland passed on December 24, 2025. She lived a life defined by quiet service, creative generosity, and steadfast faith. She passed leaving behind a legacy of warmth, purpose, and joyful devotion to others.
Barbara was born on September 17, 1946, in
Nassawadox, Virginia to Calvin "Kibby" Davis Palmer and Mary Beatrice Engel Palmer and grew up in Pocomoke, Maryland. A graduate of Pocomoke High School, Barbara's early career reflected her artistic eye and people-centered nature. She worked briefly in interior design at Montgomery Ward, where fate intervened and she met the man who would become her husband, Bob. She later served in social services before choosing, wholeheartedly, to become a full-time stay-at-home mother, a role she embraced with intention and joy.
As Sherri grew, Barbara returned her talents to the school community, first as the beloved "art lady" and a dedicated volunteer at Glen Avenue Elementary School. Her gift for nurturing creativity and making every child feel seen followed her to Wicomico Junior High School as a volunteer. Eventually, she joined Wicomico County Public Schools as a librarian at Westside Intermediate and Delmar Elementary Schools, where her calm presence and caring demeanor left a lasting impression. She concluded her WCPS career at Wicomico Middle School as the guidance secretary, a role that perfectly matched her heart for listening, helping, and quietly guiding others through life's transitions.
Faith was the foundation of Barbara's life. She spent many years actively involved in the Chesapeake Walk to Emmaus and Chrysalis communities, where she shared her love of Christ in both word and deed. Perhaps nowhere was this more joyfully expressed than through her work as a white-face Christian clown, an unconventional but deeply sincere ministry that allowed her to bring light, laughter, and hope to people of all ages. She was also a longtime supporter of the Angel Tree Prison Fellowship Ministry, believing strongly in compassion, redemption, and the power of small acts of kindness.
A lifelong crafter, Barbara found joy in creating with her hands and sharing those creations with others. Many weekends were spent at local craft shows, where Bob and Barbara's Koontz Krafts tables reflected not only her skill but her love for community and conversation. Each handmade piece carried the same care she offered so freely in every area of her life.
Barbara was proceeded in death by her parents, Calvin Davis Palmer and Mary Beatrice Engel Palmer, an older brother (Calvin) and her beloved husband of 53 years Robert Brent "Bob" Koontz. Her life continues through those who loved her most deeply: her daughter, Sherri; her son-in-law, Jim; and her treasured granddaughters, Margaret "Maggie" and Canie. She is also survived by her sister, Loretta Frame; her brother, Bruce Palmer (Pat); her sister-in-law, Marty Hill (Doug); and many nieces and nephews who will forever carry pieces of her gentle spirit.
Barbara "Granny" Koontz will be remembered not for loud accomplishments, but for the steady, faithful way she showed up for her family, her students, her church, and her community. Her life was a testament to the beauty of service, the strength of gentleness, and the enduring impact of love lived out daily. A celebration of her life will be held at Grace Church (635 E. Church St.,
Salisbury, MD) at 10:00am on Saturday, January 10, 2026.
