Eleanor Shears of Powell OH passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at the age of 91. She was surrounded by the love of her three daughters.
Eleanor was born on April 12, 1932, to Adam and Mary Jurba Hedesh, Coaldale, PA. She was the youngest of 9 children.
Ellie met Pete, the love of her life, on a summer day in their early 20's. They were married August 1957 in the Byzantine Catholic Rite and recently celebrated their 66th anniversary.
Shortly after marriage, Ellie and Pete moved to Cleveland, OH where she began her life as a homemaker, devoted wife, and mother. The young family with 4 children moved to Toledo, OH in 1970. Pete's job at Mettler Toledo, brought them to settle in Powell, OH over 30 years ago.
Faith and the love of God guided Ellie throughout her entire life. She loved her church community and never missed an opportunity to give back or be of service. She broadened and deepened her faith through travel and was an avid collector of faith-inspired books, prayers, and music. She always loved to tell a good Christian joke or funny story.
Ellie spoiled her family, friends and neighbors with countless homemade crafts, keepsakes, knit treasures, and baked treats. She delighted in working with her hands to create gifts from the heart. She was honored at her 80th birthday with a cookbook designed around cherished family recipes she kept alive that were passed down through generations. Ellie was also known for her beautiful gardens and loved being outdoors enjoying the bounties of nature.
Ellie was a sweet, humble, and loving soul. She could win you over easily with her gentle nature and sweet smile. Ellie will be dearly missed by those blessed to have known her. She always thought of others' needs before her own.
Ellie was preceded in death by husband, Peter Shears, Jr.; son, Peter Douglas Shears; parents, Adam and Mary; 4 brothers and 4 sisters.
Ellie is survived by daughters, Barbara Shears, Renee (Sam) Raisch and Margo (Myron) Shapiro; daughter-in-law, Laura Shears; six grandchildren: Anna (Andy) Smith, Mary Mohr, Alli Shears, Lizzie Shears, Maggie Shears, Peter Shears and two great grandchildren, Hudson and Cooper Smith.
Visitation will be at the Rutherford Funeral Home at Powell, 450 West Olentangy Street, Powell, Ohio on Sunday, March 24, 2024 from 2:00pm - 5:00pm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated on Monday, March 25, 2024 at 12:00pm at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 10700 Liberty Road, Powell, Ohio. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, 9571 North High Street, Lewis Center, OH.
